No one can deny that Michael Jackson is a legend in the music world. Over the course of his solo career, he produced over 100 songs on six different albums (not including the special edition, compilation, and posthumous albums). Even if you're not a fan of his music, you still probably know songs such as "Beat It," "Bad," "Smooth Criminal," "Man in the Mirror," "Heal the World," and, of course, "Thriller." However, there are a lot of other great songs that he has that aren't as popular for whatever reason. Below is a list of 11 of his songs in no particular order that definitely should receive more attention. Disclaimer: I'm very moved by song lyrics, so a lot of these songs I recommend for their messages.
1. "Keep the Faith"
I was surprised to find this song a while back. It's the 12th track off his album "Dangerous" (1991). I never expected him to produce, let alone record, such a Gospel-sounding song before. This song sounds amazing, and the lyrics are both powerful and inspirational. Anyone can appreciate this song, religious or otherwise. It speaks more to believing in yourself and persevering through life's challenges than adhering to a specific set of beliefs. Definitely a song I recommend.
2. "Just Good Friends"
This song can be found on the album "Bad" (1987). I hadn't heard it until a few weeks ago when I was looking for some of his songs on YouTube and saw this in my recommended list. I clicked on it, and I wasn't disappointed. This may be the only song you'll hear, or definitely one of the few, where someone isn't upset about being friend-zoned. It also contains a few important reminders: people shouldn't assume anything and members of the opposite sex can care about each other in a non-romantic way. Plus, this song is a duet with Stevie Wonder; I don't think I need to further explain why this song should receive more attention.
3. "Why You Wanna Trip On Me"
This song is another one of m favorites by him. Back in high school when I was obsessed with his music, I bought a DVD of the music videos for his album "Dangerous." Although this song doesn't have a music video, it's featured on the closing credits for the DVD. The beat was what originally grabbed my attention (and the guitar solo in the beginning isn't bad either), but the lyrics are what made me love it. In this song, Michael points out several different issues occurring in the world during that time, a lot still occurring today, but the media still heavily focuses on him. He reminds listeners that there are bigger, more pressing matters occurring in our world than his personal life and that we should be focusing our energy on those in need. Yeah, this song definitely needs to be played more.
4. "Heartbreaker"
This song is from the album "Invincible" (2001), which wasn't promoted as much as his other albums -- at least not in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means some of his other great songs have mostly been unheard or overlooked, "Heartbreaker" being one of them. This song seems to be ahead of its time, incorporating elements of dubstep years before the genre become popular in the U.S. The message of the song can be inferred from the title: a female broke his heart. Overall, the song is awesome and fun to listen to, which makes it sad that it's one of his more unpopular songs.
5. "Streetwalker"
"Streetwalker" is one of Michael Jackson's more upbeat, fun love songs that can be found on the "Bad: 25th Anniversary Edition" CD (2012). I didn't hear this song until I bought and played the Just Dance Michael Jackson game when I was in high school. It's kinda reminiscent of "The Way You Make Me Feel" from the original "Bad" album in which Michael, in the music video, pursues a girl out of love and wants his feelings to be reciprocated. Yet another fun but underrated song of his that's just waiting to be heard by more people.
6. "I'm So Blue"
This ballad is also featured on the "Bad: 25th Anniversary Edition" album. Another song about heartbreak, "I'm So Blue" tells how he doesn't want to suffer the pain of heartbreak anymore. Despite its overall message, the melody and rhythm don't make the song as sad as it could be, making it a good song to put on repeat when going through a breakup.
7. "Fly Away"
Another song from the "Bad: 25th Anniversary Edition" CD, "Fly Away" is a medium-tempo love song about staying with the one he loves, telling them to not give him a reason to leave and that their love will last forever. This song is pretty chill overall, easily one of those "feel good" love songs.
8. "Whatever Happens"
This ballad from "Invincible" talks about a couple having relationship issues. Despite the man's efforts to try to reassure and take care of the woman, she's still skeptical about the relationship. Despite their circumstance, they don't want the relationship to end, telling the other not to let go "whatever happens." Yet another great song from this album that hasn't received as much attention as it should.
9. "Money"
This is another song I didn't hear until I played the Just Dance Michael Jackson game. It's featured on the album "History: Past, Present, and Future, Book 1" (1995). Like "Why You Wanna Trip on Me," I was originally hooked due to the beat, but I stayed for the lyrics (and obviously the game-play). Another powerful song, these lyrics highlight the dangers of being attached to money and some of the results of this attachment. He doesn't sing this song as powerfully as some of his others, opting to rap the verses and softly sing the chorus for most of the song. However, I feel that this makes the song more powerful than if he were belting a lot of it. The softer delivery of the lyrics makes the listener focus more on what he's saying, leaving them to ponder what he's saying later if not during the song.
10. "The Lost Children"
The 14th track on "Invincible," this ballad, definitely one of the more sombre ones on this album, reminds listeners that while there may be peaceful, happy times occurring around you, this isn't the case for everyone. It's a good reminder for everyone that we need to look out for those in need, remember them, and do whatever we can to help them.
11. "For All Time"
This song is featured on the "Thriller: 25th Anniversary Edition" CD (2005). When I first heard it back in high school, I fell in love with it, and it's now not only my favorite Michael Jackson song, but also one of my top favorite songs in general. The last ballad featured on this list, it's a very sweet love song in which the message lasts "for all time." The melody is very pretty, and I love the way Michael sings it. I definitely recommend this one as well.
Even after all this time, I'm still blown away by Michael Jackson's artistry and music. Rediscovering music in general is one of my favorite pastimes, and rediscovering as well as discovering more of his music has made me appreciate his solo career all the more. His music will always be legendary, forever proving why we call him the "King of Pop."
