Some films are released that just aren't given enough credit. If it isn't produced by the most popular companies, directed by the best of the best, or isn't advertised enough, it is likely that it will be swept under the rug. Occult films in particular suffer this way; often times they are seen as "too out there". Still, despite what little attention or affection these movies have received, I highly recommend giving them a try.
3. Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)
In a world where organ epidemics run rampant, many are driven to poverty due to high surgery prices. Soon after, a company known as GeneCo emerges as a savior, offering organ financing for those too financially burdened to pay. After a while, surgery begins to transform into a fashion statement in which people are encouraged to keep their genetics "pure". However, there is a twist to organ financing: if you don't pay up in a certain amount of time, "Repo" men are hired to repossess your organs, ultimately killing you. Despite its morbid plot and amount of gore (non-realistic, over-the-top gore, I might add), this movie has an aura of dark humor surrounding it. Even better? The majority of the music is in song. Don't think traditional opera music, but hard-rock, punk, alternative music.
The movie follows Shilo Wallace (Alexa Vega, most known for her role as Carmen in Spy Kids), a 17-year-old girl whose mother died from a blood disease while giving birth to her. As a result, Shilo inherits the same disease, constantly wondering if there is a cure for her. Her father, Nathan (played by Anthony Stewart Head), keeps her locked inside to protect her from the what the world has become, which eventually causes her to sneak out and realize the truth about repossessions. On top of these characters, this movie comes with a cast full of well-known stars such as Sarah Brightman, Paul Sorvino, and even Paris Hilton.
2. Heathers (1988)
This movie is seriously not given enough love, most likely due to the unlikely combination of comedy with murder. Yes, you heard me right. The story begins when Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) begins despising her clique of the most popular girls in school, Heather Chandler, Heather Duke and Heather McNamara. After Veronica meets Jason Dean, or J.D. for short (Christian Slater), the two hit it off right away. They come up with a plan to get Heather Chandler, the group's leader, back for her vicious ways. However, the plan goes wrong and they accidentally kill Heather. From this point on, Veronica and J.D. take on a Bonnie and Clyde relationship, becoming the most dangerous couple in school. The plot is intense, but classic one-liners such as "did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?" and "dear diary, my teenage bullshit has a body count," give some much-needed, clever comic relief. Christian Slater as a bad-boy heartthrob doesn't hurt the film either *swoon*.
1. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
This one you may have heard of. Those who argue against this movie say that its plot is too nonsensical, absurd, and raunchy to enjoy, when in fact, these are the exact qualities that make this movie great. It isn't the plot that drives it; it is the action happening and how. I won't explain more, because the best way to understand and get a picture of this movie is not by hearing about it. It's experiencing it. I will say this: don't you dare watch the botched, newer version. Just don't.
There you have it! Now all there is left to do is to watch these movies!
