"What direction do you want to take your life?"
This is the dreaded question that is asked at about every family party or discussion about college. And as much as you may try to dodge the inevitable question, it is inescapable.
I have never been one of those kids who has always known what they wanted to do. I never had a true subject I loved or a passion that I could transform into a future job. Instead, I avoided the stressful and seemingly binding decision of picking a major and I entered college undecided.
While this was terrifying and reassuring at the same time, not making a decision about a major immediately was the best decision I ever made. I tried many courses (some willingly and some to fulfill requirements) that I absolutely abhorred. I began to worry I would never find my cup of tea until I took a communication course. I was able to use my creativity and expand my effective writing and speaking skills. My communication courses became an outlet where I was able to full heartedly enjoy the material and see a potential future with the subject.
Here are a few (of the many) reasons going into college Undecided was the best decision:
1. You are open-minded
Going into college with a blank canvas allows you to find your strengths (and weaknesses) and passions as you are able to explore all options with a clear mind. There are SO many opportunities for success, especially when no one is stopping you. You have free reign of courses and electives with nothing to hold you back.
2. You have freedom
It is better safe than sorry because if you are like me and very indecisive, there would be a record-breaking number for major changes. I used to envy the person that always had a plan, but now I am happy that I didn't have one because figuring out your life goals and dreams takes time. It doesn't happen overnight, let me tell you. It takes a lot of trial-and-error until you find what is just right.
3. You are not alone
I know it's scary diving into the unknown, but as stressful as it may seem, most people are in the same boat as you. Over half of my friends coming into college were undecided and we became a support system for eachother while discussing the uncertainty of a future major/career. Use this as an opportunity to explore all of your options with your friends and classmates.
