When you arrive at your campus for orientation you probably won't be thinking about what you'll major in. What you will be thinking about is how you'll arrange your room so that it has the most space possible for a beer pong table, ways to get rid of your roommate (as this may be the only way you can possibly end up in a single dorm), and you'll also be thinking about how soon the parties will begin.
After the lectures have come to an end, you will be bombarded with questions, one of which will be "what would you like to major in?" And with a nervous, cracking voice you will respond "I don't know."
As we went through the typical state-your-name-and-your-major circle we came across a couple of students who were undecided in their majors, in which my instructor responded "undecided is my favorite major." Now, he may have been joking. But, the philosophy minor in me began to question why undecided majors are actually undecided. I began to weigh the options, and I am here to express those ideas to all of you undecided and decided majors.
1. Being an undecided major does not mean that you are confused about your life.
It simply means that you were gifted with more than one talent and you are trying to find which of those talents will best suit you in the long run. It's a good think to have many strengths! And though you can't choose all of those talents--or subjects--at once, you could always go back for more!
2. Undecided does not mean unmotivated.
It's true that people in college have very different agendas, but being an undecided major doesn't put you on the "cons" side of that agenda. People aren't undecided because they don't want to be in college, people are undecided because they are working on deciding which route to take during college.
3. Being undecided for too long can either be a blessing or a curse.
To be completely honest, it may turn out to be a curse. However, for those who will stay on track on try to focus on the major that they see may fit best for their future career path, then it can turn out to be a blessing. The key is to get as many credit hours in the course of study that you believe you will decide as your major. That way, you will go into your major with some credits (at least).
To be clear, "undecided" is not a major, it is a just a small gap in your life where you are trying to figure out what is best for you. They'll tell you, "college is what you make it," and as I embark into the final stretch of my college journey I can attest to it being exactly that. College is a break from the real world, a break that allows you to grow as a person before taking on what the real world will have to offer you. If being undecided for a short amount of time will give you the strength you need to capture your wildest childhood dreams -- then be the best undecided major that you can possibly be (until you're decided)!
