This past Wednesday marked the beginning of UNCG's "Rawkin' Welcome Week," which is actually composed of two weeks full of events to prepare freshmen for college life at UNCG and to welcome students from all class levels to campus. Rawkin' Welcome Week is a great way to meet other students and staff members, familiarize oneself with campus, get involved in clubs and organizations, and it is helpful for students living on campus to familiarize themselves with their halls, residential colleges and living-learning communities.
Speaking of residential halls, not only will all halls hold meetings and play ice-breaker games, many residential colleges and living-learning communities may have their own Rawkin' Welcome Week events. The Spencer’s community, for one, held a “Pokemon Go” walk on the evening of the 17th, and held a game night in the North Spencer parlor the evening of the 18th. All of the residential colleges--Grogan, Strong, Ashby and the Lloyd International Honors College are meeting at Rita’s Italian Ice the evening of the 20th. If you live in a residential college or living-learning community, look for flyers around your hall and keep in touch with the resident advisors to see if events are being planned for the coming week!
During Rawkin’ Welcome Week, several large events will be held outside for students of all class levels. Each year, UNCG’s Residence Hall Association hosts a movie on the Quad lawn (or in the Cone ballroom within the EUC in the event of inclement weather) and this year it’s the hilarious new Melissa McCarthy movie, “The Boss.” The following Saturday, August 27th, the opening carnival will also be held on the Quad lawn, and it will feature events, games, and snacks. Fall Kickoff will be held on college avenue the first Tuesday after classes start and will provide opportunities to join a club and get involved with other students on campus, and is an excellent resource for those looking for a group that shares similar interests.
During Rawkin’ Welcome Week, there are also resources to help better your personal college experience. Classroom tours run from the 17th to the 20th, and walk-in advising is held during the first week of classes. A poster sale in the EUC (in front of the bookstore) is running from the 18th until the 26th, and the posters feature everything to musician to natural artwork.
Also, remember to keep on the lookout for Pokemon Go events--with the popularity of Pokemon Go, it’s bound to be the subject of more events and is also a good excuse to take a long walk around campus with friends and explore.
Of course, this isn't all, so in order to learn about more events, review the times and dates, be notified of location changes (such as in the case of inclement weather) check out UNCG's Your First Year!
