The Ultimate 2015 Top-Five List

Another year down the drain! With the turn of the New Year comes the endless end-of-year best-of lists, and with all that Internet chatter it's hard to decide which list to believe. Let met give you a hint – it's mine. We had some great films, some amazing music, and some so-so TV this year folks. So let’s recap the top fives of 2015.

Movies

5. "Inside Out"
Pixar’s storytelling base – What if [Cars, Fish, Toys, etc.] had emotions? – is on full display here in a perfect form. If emotions had emotions, what would they do? Make you cry for two hours, apparently. Like Marvel, Pixar had two films out this year, but I don’t think anyone actually went to see "The Good Dinosaur."

4. "Trainwreck"
Amy Schumer’s first foray into film (though certainly not her last), was a far from what the title suggests. Those who have seen her successful Comedy Central show, "Inside Amy Schumer," know the biting satire and sex-filled comedy that Amy is best at, and "Trainwreck" really delivers. Amy Schumer went from “that funny blonde chick on TV” to “that funny blonde chick winning all the awards.”

3. "Ant-Man"
I’m really digging this “every film is a different genre” thing that Marvel is doing. "Ant-Man" was by far the best superhero/heist film to come out all year ("Avengers: Age Of Ultron" was a total bore). Clever, genuinely funny, and the entire cast was perfect. Not to mention the genius marketing campaign. Sure, the plot is a bit of a rehash of "Iron Man," but aren’t all Marvel movies just the same five plot points recycled over and over?

2. "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens"
I was tempted to put this at number one for the hype alone but "Force Awakens" was amazing in its own right. Since the film is still hot in theatres, and not everyone stood in line for five hours like I did, I’ll avoid spoilers, but I can’t believe that J.J. Abrams was allowed to include [REDACTED]! Reuniting Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill onscreen was a great rush of nostalgia (especially when Han Solo [REDACTED]). Newcomers Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and BB-8 have given the series a "New Hope" for future installments.

1. "Mad Max: Fury Road"
"Mad Max: Fury Road" had everything you look for in a summer blockbuster – intense action scenes, a reboot/sequel of a popular 80s franchise, a bunch of powerful female ladies kicking the ass of the patriarchy. Tom Hardy’s titular Max was an excellent brooding silent sidekick for Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, the real hero of the movie. "Fury Road" was by far the best film of the year, is it possible to break a Blu-Ray from overuse?

Television

5. "Empire"
"Empire" is a soap opera for the primetime audience – it's not particularly well written, the characters are wild stereotypes, but the music is phenomenal, the actors are amazing, and Cookie is serving up #looks every single episode. I can’t believe this indulgently cheesy slice of TV was served up to us in January, and already we have a season two!

4. "The Muppets"
The “mockumentary” style of TV is dead, it's over, it’s done. "The Office" made it popular, "Parks & Rec" perfected it, and "Modern Family" won all the awards for it. However, ABC’s (reboot? revival? reimagining?) of Jim Henson’s Muppet characters is a blast of fresh air for the TV sitcom. With NBC burning its comedy line-up to the ground, and CBS continuing to produce television exclusively for octogenarians, and The CW staying as wildly out of touch with today’s youth as possible, ABC seems to be the new choice for comedy. What this jaded, cynical, 22-year-old loves best about "The Muppets" is seeing the wholesome characters of his youth talk about banging each other. It's weirdly adult, but I can’t stop watching.

3. "Master of None"
Netflix is the top of the TV game right now. They take risks, they produce a full season of a show without canceling it, and they racked up more Emmy nominations than any other network. "Master of None," of their newest comedies, is from Aziz Ansari (Tom from "Parks & Rec") and is one of the most clever and well-done shows about finding your way in life. One of the best episodes comes late in the season when we observe the relationship of two characters compressed into 20-something minutes. Also, Aziz’s real-life parents play his parents on the show!

2. "Marvel's Jessica Jones"
There’s a terrible truth we all need to face – Marvel movies are not good. They’re running out of ideas. They’re recycling the same plots and rehashing the same CGI orgy in movie theatres every year. HOWEVER, Marvel is making some real good entertainment with their TV shows (with the exception of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," that needs to end soon). Last year’s "Daredevil" showed how beautiful the partnership between Marvel and Netflix is, and this year’s "Jessica Jones" showed how interesting some of the lesser known comic characters are when given the chance to shine. A very realistic look at rape, PTSD, and abuse in a world where super-humans are around every corner.

1. "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"
It’s hard to watch Tina Fey’s latest show and not be happy. Everything about "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" is just plain fun – from Ellie Kemper’s adorable turn as the titular unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, to Titus Burgess’s Tituss and his hit song “Peeno Noir,” to all the amazing celebrity guest appearances. I’ve seen the first season at least seven times thanks to binge culture and, of course, Netflix.

Music

5. "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)"
Do I need to explain this? It’s the Star Wars soundtrack! By John Williams! Also there wasn't a lot of good new music this year!

Notable Tracks: Rey's Theme, Han and Leia, March of the Resistance, Jedi Steps/Finale

4. Uptown Special - Mark Ronson
Can you believe we’ve had an entire year of jamming to “Uptown Funk”? A lot of people overlooked the rest of the album, which includes some great collaborations with Mystikal, Kevin Parker, and Keyone Starr. It’s hard not to dance when this album comes on.

Notable Tracks: Uptown Funk, Feel Right, I Can’t Lose, Daffodils

3. Blue Neighborhood - Troye Sivan
Troye Sivan’s first studio album packs a punch – like Adele’s 25, Blue Neighborhood speaks to lost loves and broken hearts. What makes Blue Neighborhood especially exciting is it is one of the few mainstream albums about queer love (Troye came out when he was 15), though you don’t have to be queer to appreciate Blue Neighborhood.

Notable Tracks: WILD, FOOLS, TALK ME DOWN, YOUTH

2. 25 - Adele
After a four-year absence, Adele returns with the stunningly beautiful 25. It’s perfect for anyone who has had their heart broken recently (thanks for this timely present, Adele!), met a new love, or just likes a good cathartic cry every once and a while. This album makes me miss relationships I never had with people that don’t exist.

Notable Tracks: Hello, Send My Love (To Your New Lover), When We Were Young, River Lea

1. Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording) - Lin-Manuel Miranda
A musical about Alexander Hamilton? That sounds boring as hell. Just kidding, it’s the most compelling piece of musical theatre in recent memory. Not only is it an interesting look at the man who single-handedly created our economy, but the entire thing is a Hip-Hop/R&B dream – the Cabinet meetings are rap battles, you guys! In the words of the writer (who also plays Alexander Hamilton) “It’s the story of America then, told by America now.” Be prepared to listen to this show non-stop.

Notable Tracks: Wait For It, Satisfied, Non-Stop, The Room Where It Happens

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
