As many (or all) of you know, the UK has voted to secede from the European Union. According to BBC News, over 30 million people in the United Kingdom turned out to vote, and this was the final count.
The southern part of England and most of Wales voted to leave, while 68 percent of the 2 million voters in Scotland and 59.9 percent of the almost 3 million voters in London voted to remain. Northern Ireland also had a majority remain vote of 55.8 percent out of 700,000 voters; but it was a lost cause.
We all know what's passed and what's happened- but what's going to happen? Not just to the UK, but to the EU? And other countries around the world? Brexit won't just affect Europe, it could hurt everyone.
1. Economics
The British pound crashed from 1.5 to 1.3 in six hours -- the lowest it's been in over thirty years. This will also affect the value of Mexican, American, Swedish, Polish, and other countries' currencies. Japan has even stopped trading and investing in GB-related assets because of the harm it can do to the yen. Now, the UK will have to hike up its interest rates to prevent inflation, which will lead to a recession not unlike the Great Depression the world suffered between World War I and World War II.
2. Markets
Now that the UK is leaving, they've severely injured their trade market and will have to draw up new trading contracts with just about every nation they deal with. Also, Britain leaving the EU can make it harder to transport goods across the English Channel (whether it's import or export).
3. Jobs
The pound is crashing, rates will be jacked up, so employers will begin to lay off employees in an effort to conserve work force and money. This can lead to an enormous unemployment problem in the UK that could potentially affect other countries (especially since London is such a huge financial banking hub).
4. Eur-Exit
The UK's choice to leave has gotten it into the heads of other countries that they should leave the EU, as well. People are calling for France's exit (Frexit), Italy's exit (Itexit), and even Dexit from the Netherlands. This can't happen. If European countries keep seceding they'll break the already fragile economic scales.
5. People
The UK has a high employment rate, and it's drawn immigrants from multiple countries to seek a living within the UK's borders. If the UK successfully secedes from the EU, the migrants (as well as other citizens of the EU) will not be able to travel, live, or work between the UK and continental Europe as easily. Right now, they're allowed to cross borders for work and living without visas; but that may change.
Also, the removal of the UK from the EU means that it won't have to obey all of the laws laid down by the EU- including those protecting LGBT+ and other minorities.
On another note- a majority of the young people in the UK voted remain, and the majority of the votes to leave were from older people. This referendum will affect the young peoples' abilities to make a living, get a job, or even leave the UK for a better life.
But, there is hope.
Many people are calling for a revote, specifically because politicians like Nigel Farage have recinded the promises of good fortune and support they'd promised to the UK if it left the EU. UK citizens also were unaware of what a drastic effect their departure would have on the world. The idea to leave was devised by David Cameron, who has since resigned his post as Prime Minister and is trying to keep his head down. The "Leave" campaign was based on scaremongering, telling citizens that they spent about 350 million pounds a week on the EU (when really it was half of that) and blowing up LGBT+ cases.
If you'd like, you can sign the petition to call for a revote here. The more votes it has, the better; and maybe we can stop and reverse what looks like a second Great Depression that's headed our way with no intention of slowing down.
