Why U'D Love Your Melon, Too

It's crazy just how much could happen in a single year.

If you've been around campus lately, you're bound to run into at least one person rocking a Love Your Melon beanie along with their bean boots and Canada Goose coat. Or maybe you spotted it recently on your favorite celebrity, whatever the case it's the newest fad, with the most rewarding twist. Never heard of Love Your Melon? Well, well, well. Let me just break it down for you.

46 children get diagnosed with cancer every day. 46 families have their lives changed in the blink of an eye. 46 doctors have to inform this horrid news. Every day that we take for granted could be the day someone could never forget, the day where it all begins, or the day it all ends.

Love Your Melon is an apparel brand ran by college students across the country on a mission to give a hat to every child battling cancer in America. Through the company's one-for-one program, a warm hat is given for every product purchased, to a child who is going through cancer treatment. These hats make children feel comfortable and warm, giving them confidence after losing their hair due to chemotherapy.

As an campus ambassador, our job is to give these hats a home. Our job is give these children another reason to smile. Our job is to make everyday be the best day of these children's lives. For every hat we find a home for, the more rewarding our job becomes. The best part of this organization is that we get to personally deliver these hats to these little fighters and be their own personal superheroes, when it reality, they are really ours.

Love Your Melon just recently reached their goal of the One Million Dollar mission and successfully donated 50 percent of the profits equally to the Pinky Swear research fund and CureSearch for the fight.

The University of Delaware Campus Crew was started less than a year ago, with only six, (yes, just six!) members right in the infamous Dicky F1 lounge (RIP). It started right after Delaware's very own UDance 12-hour dance marathon in the fight against childhood cancer took place. The strength we witnessed first hand by these kids is just something that cannot be described in words, and we all walked out of that room with the drive to do more. One thing is for certain- once you step into that room in the morning, 12 hours later, you walk out a completely different person.

.

A few days later, Lauren Romeo, Delaware's Crew Caption, informed my four floor-mates and I about Love Your Melon. We all instantly fell in love. Oh, what a journey we've had. From hosting meetings and taking selfies like these as freshmen right in the Dickinson grass, to hoping to possibly reach the goal of selling 50 hats by the fall semester, we've watched as not only our crew's goals and achievements grew, but we did too.

We've had events in Trabant handing out bracelets, created days such as "Melon Monday" encouraging everyone to show off their latest LYM gear, and have even gone so far as to have several trips to the Ronald McDonald House, with the pleasure of meeting and interacting with these selfless children, one on one. We have also made strides to have our very own Superhero, and help her along on her journey anyway we can.

With the help of our family, friends, and numerous sororities, we've watched as our followers steadily increased, our Instagram has flustered, our credit levels escalated and our crew has expanded. We have now sold 600 hats, and our crew has hit over 75 members and is still continuing to grow.

But it does not stop here. We want YOU to get involved. We want YOU to spread the mission. We want YOU to feel the warmth of a child's heart and experience all that Love Your Melon truly has to not only offer, but give back.

Help us by following both our Instagram and Twitter: @udellylymcrew and liking us on Facebook, University Of Delaware Campus Crew to hear all about the next steps we take on this amazing journey.

Join the fight against childhood cancer by helping put a hat on each child's head and a smile on their face. All hats can be purchased on LoveYourMelon.Com and by selecting 'University of Delaware' at checkout.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
