On the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015, UCLA's chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority threw a Kanye West and Kardashian-themed party that they dubbed to be "Kanye Western." Themed parties are not uncommon in the Greek life, but this night's social event has gained an abnormal amount of attention becoming a talking point for many in this past week.
According to the Daily Bruin, the guests reportedly wore "baggy clothes, plumped lips, and padded bottoms" and even went as far as to cover their faces in charcoal.
In the days after the party was held, pictures were posted on various social media platforms. Many UCLA students and community members spoke out against that night's events. On Thursday, UCLA students protested with the school's Afrikan Student Union (ASU) in order to ensure their voices were heard about the subject. The school's Afrikan American Newsmagazine, NOMMO, wrote an article in the students point of view about how they are affected by Tuesday night's events.
Retelling the account of one Jendalyn Coulter, the article reads that some party attendees made their way to campus, and that "they had black paint on their faces and were dressed in overalls, plaid shirts and gold chains." Coulter goes on to say that "as [she] walked back to [her] dorm [she] couldn't believe they had the audacity to come on campus dressed like that."

A spokesperson on behalf of the fraternity posted on behalf of the UCLA Sigma Phi Epsilon Facebook page in response to the outrage in the wake of the party.
"We sincerely apologize for the offense and hurt we caused to our fellow Bruins, especially those in the African American community, by our social event with Alpha Phi Sorority on Tuesday night."
The post goes on to say that they had "intended to celebrate pop culture" but that in hindsight, the "theme showed a lack of judgement on [their] part and that some of the guests' costumes were offensive to members of the bruin community." The school's chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon denies the use of blackface at the party, saying that the accused were dressed as gold miners, in accordance with Kanye West's song "Gold Digger".
"...their attire had nothing to do with race. This does not excuse our lack of judgment in not recognizing the inappropriateness of the party theme and that other costumes were offensive."
The school itself has made a statement regarding the night's events which they expressed directly through the Daily Bruin. They claim to be gathering all necessary facts and dealing with the party attendees as they see fit, making sure that they keep a dialogue running with all parties involved.
