Uber! How many people loved thee in the beginning! I know I did! That was until I found out that there were so many things wrong with them. For those that are unfamiliar with the cab service, here's what it is. They are a service that has a fleet of cars and a bunch of drivers that need extra money. Yeah, pretty bland explanation, right? Well, that's pretty much the company.
Yes, they charge less than a cab, but the service is not really as good as it is pictured to be. Uber has been in the news profusely for their lack of, pretty much, everything. The first news story that was brought to my attention was the fact that most drivers refuse to pick up the disabled and accommodate us. This, to me, is heartbreaking. I am an on-the-go type individual and I love the idea of just hopping in and going. There has been multiple lawsuits set upon the service because drivers refuse to allow us in their vehicles.
What is the big fear? That a wheelchair will scratch your vehicle, or that someone's crutches may bust out your windows? If that's the case, then you should be worried about the big Uber banner that you have to put on your car. You know, that might scratch the exterior! When Uber has been questioned on this they say they have the right because they are a technological platform. Platform or not, you are giving your drivers the right to discriminate, which is something the disabled community fights so hard against.
Another instance when the cab service was in the news was when a driver placed fake vomit in the vehicle after the passenger had exited the vehicle. The time and thought process put into this is absolutely ridiculous. The most recent shenanigan that the company has gotten themselves into has cost them $10 million. The lawsuit states there are many misleading things about drivers' background checks and airport toll fees. Apparently, Uber does not have the safest drivers, as they claim. Scary, right?
The Mayor of LA wants to put in place a fingerprinting protocol for Uber and other ride-giving apps. They are mandating that it be in every background check. You see what happens when the people start to question? Things begin to unravel. While Uber looked beautiful in the beginning, it has come a long way -- the wrong way. It now just seems as if the creator was trying to make some quick money and had no idea of the proper channels that it needed to be put through.
It should be a lesson to all businesses and those looking to start up -- do it right or not at all.
