Tyler Perry's New Television Drama

Well everyone, Tyler Perry has done it AGAIN! On Monday, August 22nd at 9pm, TLC aired a two hour premiere of Tyler Perry's new show, Too Close To Home. With over two million viewers watching, the show was an instant hit. Though this new TV series is different from what Perry usually does, it was loved almost automatically.

TLC's first scripted drama is about a woman named Anna who has no other choice but to return to the home in Alabama she so happily left after her career in the White House is ruined by a sudden and national sex scandal with...the President of the United States.

**SPOILER ALERTS**

Somehow, Anna has convinced her friends that she and her family (who she cut off once she left home) are of wealthy status when in actuality, they're poor and barely making a living in their trailer park houses. When the scandal of her affair with the president becomes public, her lie is brought to light and her friends are not only shocked but want nothing to do with her; they don't want her bad reputation to stain theirs. The show goes back and forth between Anna's story and the people (mostly family) she left behind in Alabama.

The main characters or leading roles in this series are: Anna (played by Danielle Savre ), Bonnie (played by Kelly Sullivan), Brody (played by Brock O'Hurn), J.B. (played by Brad Benedict) and Shelby (played by Brooke Anne Smith). According to TLC, the regulars in the series are Doctor Allen (played by Alpha Trivette), Jolene (played by Trisha Rae Stahl), Mobley (played by Robert Craighead), Annie Thrash, and Curran Walters. The recurring cast members are Valerie (played by Ashley Love-Mills), Dax (played by Nick Ballard), Victor (played by Charles Justo), John (played by Christian Ochoa) and Rick (played by Justin Gabriel). Heather Locklear (plays First Lady of the United States) and Matt Battaglia (plays President of the United States) are guest stars.

**SPOILER ALERTS**

As of what we can understand from the first episode so far, Bonnie, Anna’s sister, is a poor young woman who’s struggling to pay her and her mother’s bills. Even though she’s in an on and off relationship with her deadbeat man J.B., she’s secretly in love with Anna’s ex-boyfriend, a handsome and long haired man named Brody. Brody, who also has feelings for Bonnie, has some life struggles of his own. He has to care of his father who suffers from Alzheimer's and frequently forgets who his own son is. Shelby, Anna and Bonnie’s sister, is a druggie who will literally do anything for some drugs. From the drama packed first episode, you can already tell how entertaining and hectic this series will be.

If you missed the premiere of the show on Monday at 9pm on TLC, the OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) also airs it at 10pm after Tyler Perry's other hit show, The Haves and the Have Nots. I highly suggest you give this show a try because if you watch anything Tyler Perry, you know he won't disappoint. Have a great week everyone and watch the trailer for Too Close to Home (below) if you haven't already!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours.
