"Elle...Earth to Ellie...Elizabeth!"
Elle snaps back to reality, a reality that is a crammed gas station bathroom with a pregnancy test in her hand.
"Oh, sorry," she says looking at Paisley, "let's just get this over with."
She sits down and pees on the stick, placing the plastic cap back on the tip. She then stands up, and places the test on the sink in front of her.
"How long do we have to wait?"
"It says here 2 minutes," Paisley states still looking at the instructions. "Ha, the same amount of time it takes someone to get knocked-up."
Elle rolls her eyes as she states, "You are so not helping..."
"I know, I'm sorry. Just trying to ease the tension."
"Well don't, P. This isn't a joke! My entire life could change in two freaking minutes, and your over here cracking jokes. So, unless you're about to say something helpful, then shut up!"
A few seconds of silence pass, before Paisley grabs Elle's shoulders to make her stop pacing. She then says, "have you talked to Nate?"
"That's not helpful."
"Well, have you?"
"Are you asking if I called the guy and said, 'Hey, I know we haven't talked since the night you cheated on your girlfriend, with me...but, I think I might be pregnant.' NO! No, I haven't talked to him."
"Well if it's positive you are going to have to say something to him, E."
"Let's just cross that bridge when, and if, we have too," Elle says beginning to pace once again, "God, this is taking forever! How much longer?"
"The time says there is still a minute left," answers Paisley, looking down at her phone.
"Whatever happened with y'all anyway? I thought y'all broke up?"
"We did...I mean, we are....or, we were...I don't know, P."
Elle tries to replay the events in her head, but the whole thing is just one tangled mess of drunken mistakes.
"We did break up." Elle states trying to explain, "I always said he still had feelings for his ex, and obviously he did because they got back together a month after we broke up." Taking a deep breath, she says, "but then we ended up at the same party a few weeks ago. We ended up bumping into each other, and you know how it goes. We were drinking a little and then one thing led to another, and now here we are."
She looks up at Paisley, hoping to find some sort of answer.
"Well, like I said. If it's positive, you have to-"
Paisley is interrupted by the sound of the time signaling that the two minutes are over.
"Crap! You look, I can't. God, how could I be so stupid!"
Elle says this as she hits herself on the forehead.
"Are you ready?" Paisley asks, grabbing the test.
"No, but it's not like that matters now..."
Paisley turns the test over, looking at the indicator, "Wait, how many lines means positive?"
"Two. Why, is there two? Please tell me there is only one line...just one small line!" Elle says these words more as a prayer than a question.
Looking up from the test, Paisley looks into Elle's eyes and says,
"Remember how you said your life could change in two minutes..."
THE END.
