In order to be successful in today’s musical scene, it is necessary to be unique in some way so that you stand out among the millions who are trying to make a career, just like you. Twenty One Pilots is a group that has done an exceptional job standing out.
I recently attended my second Twenty One Pilots concert and was completely blown away all over again. Since the first concert I went to over a year ago, their group has grown significantly, and so has their following. The reason for this dramatic growth is, as I mentioned, their unique music style, but also their breathtaking live shows.
A while back, my buddy’s girlfriend bought him tickets to a Twenty One Pilots show. She wasn’t a huge fan of their music going into it, but when the concert was over, she walked out the doors with a completely different mindset. She was obsessed. Ironically, this exact same thing happened to me and my girlfriend after she bought me tickets to their recent show in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She walked into it indifferent, but left awestruck.
The reason I mention these two situations is because they show how absolutely insane Twenty One Pilot’s live concerts are. Their shows are good enough to change the mindset of anyone attending from, “These guys are alright,” to, “When is the next concert because I need to be there.”
The show has been expertly crafted to keep the audience involved. The two young men that make up the band, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, are constantly moving around, pleasing the crowd, and adding fun surprises. For example, at one point in the show, they bring out a drum set on a piece of plywood and set in on the hands of the crowd standing in front of the stage. Josh then proceeds to climb on to the drum set that is being held up by the audience and play a song.
The bottom line is Twenty One Pilots are huge. They are getting even more huge because people attending their concerts are realizing that they have never seen anything like this. This makes me wonder, what makes them different? Why does this style of music work for this band, but not others?
I believe that Tyler and Josh have made their unique lyrics and style so popular because of their personalities. The two of them, on and off stage, seem like they could just be those two guys that you grew up with who live down the street from you. They are just young guys with huge dreams just like anyone else. This is why they are so great. This is why their shows are so much fun.
Tyler always ends their shows by saying a short, yet powerful line.
“We are Twenty One Pilots, and so are you."
We are all like Tyler and Josh. We feel a connection with them and their music like we have never felt before. We are Twenty One Pilots.
