Mental illness is hard to explain to someone who doesn't struggle with it themselves. Yet, Tyler Joseph always seems to know how to put feelings into words. Twenty One Pilots new album 'Trench' has lived up to the hype.
The lyrics not only illustrates but they have resonated with a lot of people.
Here are just a few that translate what a lot of us feel on a day to day basis.
"In Trench I'm not alone" -Leave the City
Even in our worst moments, we are not alone. There are plenty of other people who are struggling too.
"If you need anyone, I'll stop my plans but you'll have to tie me down and then break both my hands" -Jumpsuit
Wanting to be there and be apart of something is hard when your head gets in your way.
"We are not just graffiti on a passing train"- Levitate
We are all more than just something to glimpse at.
"I am on an island, no one to confide" -Pet Cheetah
Mental illness can feel like you are completely alone, with no one to confide in.
"I'm just a ghost, I'll morph into someone else"- Morph
On the bad days, it seems like all we want to do is to be someone else- or just disappear.
"What are we here for, if not to run straight through all our tormentors?" -Morph
Life is all about dealing with the shit that gets thrown our way. We were made to fight our demons.
"I felt I was invincible, you wrapped around my head. Now different lives I lead, my body lives on lead" -Chlorine
There's a toxicity to mental illness that drags you down and can make you feel heavy. But we also feel more comfortable with it, than without it.
"I feel my spirit is contained like neon inside the glass, they form my brain" -Bandito
Living in this society, we feel can feel trapped and isolated from what our real selves are. It stifles our creativity and meaning.
"We'll win but not everyone will get out" -Nico and The Niners
It's important to know that we can beat these mental illnesses, there are just some people who leave us a little earlier than others.
"If I lose to myself you won't mourn a day and you'll move on to someone else" -Neon Gravestones
In suicide or death, there is always the thought that the people around you will move on and not be hurt. It's not about hurting them, you just want to end your own pain.
"I want to stop time" -Pet Cheetah
Sometimes everything seems like too much and we need time to just stop for a minute.
"I'm tired of tending to this fire, I've used up all I've collected" -Leave the City
There are days when you just feel like you're trying and trying and trying and nothing is happening. It takes all of your energy to get through the day.
"Cowards only come out when the hours late and everyone's asleep" - Levitate
We've all sat up at night thinking about the dark and dangerous things within our minds.
"I'm not sure if fear is a rival or close relative of the truth" -Bandito
Our fears and anxieties are either based on reality, or so far from it that we can't understand them.
"I keep on goin' back even though it's me I abuse" -Cut My Lip
We can continue falling into the same self-destructive patterns.
"Either way it helps to hear these words bounce off of you. The softest echo could be enough for me to make it through" -Bandito
Giving advise to other people can sometimes be what you need to hear yourself.
"Save your razor blades now, not yet" -Nico and The Niners
Self-harm is never the answer. It just takes that idea of holding on for just one more day, one more hour, one more minute- and then it will get better.
"I've been tested like the end of a weathered flag that's by the sea" -Chlorine
Mental illness can make you feel beaten down and broken.
"I created this world to feel some control" -Bandito
Control is something so many of us want, but when your anxieties get in the way, it can feel like a complete loss of control and sanity.
"In time, I will leave the city. For now, I will stay alive" -Leave the City
Again, just holding on for a little while longer, staying alive, and making it to the point were you can get out of a negative situation of just being able to get rid of what was holding you back from healing.
Struggling with mental illnesses sucks, but having someone who just understands it can make all the difference.
Twenty One Pilots never fail to be relatable and conscious of their audience. They provide a safe space that just makes sense for us who are struggling or are even just having a bad day.
