Have you heard of the talented musician, Tunji Ige? The Philadelphia artist has been working in the music industry for a minute now and has some great results. Over the past few years, he has been able to build a social media following and rack up millions of streams on his music. Tunji was also working behind the scenes for many years in the Philadelphia area. He was doing things like film, design and taking notes to launch his own career when it came to that point.
Tunji has production credits on one of the biggest tracks of 2017, “Location” by Khalid. For the official remix of the track, Khalid brought on Lil Wayne and Kehlani which are some pretty notable artists to have on a beat you produced. Tunji has produced a majority of his own tracks which is not very common with artists today. He began to become interested in production at a very early age, only 11 years old. He never wanted to rap over other people’s beats so he decided to make his own. He had the passion to take his production to the next level by learning the fundamentals of music.
Tunji had a strong Nigerian influence throughout his childhood with both parents being Nigerian. He grew up listening to Fela Kuti and a majority of Afrobeat style music. He told okayafrica.com that he was listening to Fela every day because his dad was always playing his albums. Tunji noted Fela to be one of his biggest influences in regards to his music. In terms of production influences, Kanye West is someone that had a major role in shaping his sound. He told Pigeons and Planes about some of his musical influences including Kid Cudi to James Blake. “It’s way too many to list,” says Tunji.
Over the past few years, Tunji has released projects like “The Love Project” and “Missed Calls.” I was introduced to his music in 2016 when I heard his track “On My Grind” as the intro song for Rhetorik’s Vlog. I loved the song from the first listen and started to explore more tracks of his. I had some of his tracks like “Bring Yo Friends” and "Don’t Do Too Much” on my playlist for months. His music has a unique sound that is easily noticeable upon first listen. The production and his voice set him apart from from other artists trying to make it in the industry today. His music is genuine and real which is worth a listen in my opinion. I love to hear artists that have their own lane and Tunji most definitely has that. He’s been setting himself apart from the competition since the beginning.
