When I started my college career, I found myself steering away from trying completely new things. Instead of new things, I moved from high-school level organizations to college equivalents of similar organizations. I went from the Future Business Leaders of America (a club that I joined in high school solely because I found business fun, even though I am now a nursing major), to the Student Nurse Organization. I went from Student Council to Campus Activities Board, and so on. The only foreign part of college that I managed to pick up was having a work-study in the box office for my school’s theater and arts department. Still, when working in the box office, I had very little involvement in the department. This was, of course, until the day I volunteer to work on the crew for the show.
Walking in on my first day, I was extremely nervous because I have never done anything like this before. In fact, I had only seen one-two live productions, making this entire concept foreign to me. However, I knew a majority of the students already through classes and the box office. The students that I did not know introduced themselves to me and were very friendly. In fact, everybody was extremely friendly. Throughout the day, I managed to memorize everyone’s names.
Throughout the first day, I had very few challenges. The biggest challenge on my first day on the spotlight was trying to figure out the words used for directions and cues. While most of it did not pertain to me, I still wanted to have an idea on what was going on in the show. Luckily, by the end of the day, I understood most of what was being said. Other than that, everything else seemed fairly simple.
Although getting ready for the show is just beginning, the beginning of being part of the crew has been a personal success. I have no regrets in volunteering to do spotlights for the show. The best part about helping with the show for theater is the people. Everyone was so friendly and funny, and no one made me feel like an outcast because I was new to this.
College is important because it gives students the opportunity to be involved before they experience the world outside of college, and I am very happy that I decided to help out with theater. I never had a completely new experience in college until I started this. Although I was nervous in the beginning, I can not wait to see where the rest of rehearsals and the shows bring me. Not only am I working with a fun and hilarious group of people, but I am finally fulfilling my wish to try something new.
