I always enjoy asking people questions. Usually they are pretty stupid, such as, "What's your favorite pop-tart flavor?" or "If you had to lose one body part what would it be?" and "If you had to be best friends with a famous gorilla who would it be?" These dumb little questions give unique insight to a person's character and I treasure them for that. But one of the most thought provoking questions I've been confronted with personally is this one. "If you had to choose between truth or beauty what one would you choose?"
This question originates from a quote by the poet John Keats, "Truth is beauty, truth beauty - That is all ye know on Earth and all ye need to know." This quote may seem like it has no purpose and just repeats itself. But in fact it proves itself in a useful way through the tangible means of science and mathematics study.
For example, even without knowing intense music theory, the average listener can listen to music and appreciate its beauty. But if we take a deeper look at the music theory we see some beauty at a different level. The "truth" part of music is found in the mathematics formula. The mathematics behind music theory is symmetrical and the harmonies you hear in music is in a certain order. The science behind the scenes in music is laid out neatly and can be appreciated in itself. The truth about the music is the beauty. But can this concept be applied to something other than science, such as our worldview?
The truth can be a hard thing to accept most of the time. We as humans often like to mask the ugly truths in our lives with half baked perceptions that are false. We like to paint the best image possible of ourselves with only letting people know about some mildly bad things about us. In the age of social media this is all the more evident, when we see people present near perfect images of themselves. It seems that people would rather choose beauty over truth. But can the truth, just like in science lead the way to beauty?
If a person steals $100 from someone and gets away with it no problem, is telling the truth beautiful? At that exact moment they do confess, it probably won't be. It doesn't feel good owning up to being a thief and facing the consequences and breaking someone's trust. But the truth leads into something more beautiful than keeping the lie to yourself and getting away with it. The truth produces humble and honest character traits, and that is beautiful.
So what can we take away from this concept? I believe we should take away that the truth is always the ultimate choice, no matter how hard it is, in the end it will be worth it. This is especially related to our worldview. We shouldn't say there is a God because it is a beautiful idea (not saying it isn't), but we should say there is a God because it is the truth. We are not controlled by feelings, but facts. As cold and heartless as that sounds, what I have come to know from the facts I've seen is that they lead to indescribable, beautiful feelings.
