The 5 common misconceptions about liberals.

1. Liberals believe that people shouldn't have to work for the things they are given.

Liberals believe in strong government social policy, with strong government intervention. Meaning, they believe that the government should help the people who are struggling to survive in America’s current economic condition. Unfortunately, in the current economic system of America it is very hard to escape the depths of poverty. On the welfare system, as one makes a dollar, a dollar of their welfare benefits is taken away from them. This means that one can’t gain a profit from beginning a new job, which makes leaving poverty extremely different. Liberals are not calling for handouts to people who don’t ‘deserve’ them. Liberals are simply asking that our government takes a stronger initiative in helping the people, who are working to help themselves but can’t.

2. Liberals are "snowflakes."

Simply put this means that liberals are weak. But how can a group of people who consistently go against the status quo, who never shy from conflict, and loudly voice their opinions weak. Sure, you can disagree with liberal views but you cannot call someone weak because their views contrast with yours. The idea of liberals being weak may come from the fact that liberals are pro asking for help and helping people. Today in America we are told to not ask for help, and to do deal with things on our own. In reality, this individualist mindset cannot lead to positive outcomes, because in order for anything to be accomplished help is essential. Asking for help, and helping others does not make you weak. Having a view that directly conflicts with a traditional view does not make you weak. And being liberal certainly does not make you a snowflake.

3. Liberals are blinded by equality.

The goal of equality is a strong and honest goal. If everyone in America was blinded by equality, then maybe America would be equal. The claim behind this statement is that liberals are so blinded by their ultimate goals of equality that they don’t think about what is better for America. Because of their equality goal they don’t worry about the people higher up, who are on the high end of equality and how equality would affect them. But, equality can only benefit all Americans. The economic disparity that plagues America is larger than that of any industrialized country, as well as the inequality within the healthcare system. Liberals are not blinded by their goal of equality. They understand the main ramification of equality: higher taxes. But, they also understand the positive outcome that would come out of true equality. Equality is not something that blinds, but something that drives.

4. Liberals want to take the wealthy's money away.

Taxes. Taxes are the number one scare for American’s conservatives, and those conservatives feel that all liberals want to do is raise taxes. With claims like “paying for other’s birth control” or “helping someone who is too lazy to work for themselves,” conservatives are constantly complaining about Liberals want to take their hard-earned money. However, taxes will always be a part of the fabric of America, and whatever ideology you hold, you yourself are benefitting from those taxes. Now, I guarantee that liberal or not no one is happy to see a large chunk of their pay check disappear, but conservatives have to start looking at the big picture. If you want a better America, you have to pay to get it. Liberals aren’t excited to take the wealthy’s money away, and they sure are not excited to give their own money away. But, if you want to live in a world with paved highways, a police force, quality food, and maybe (if we try hard enough) some decent healthcare then you have to pay taxes. Progressive taxes are a part of society because wealthy people have more money to give. That won’t change unless one stops being wealthy, but it is not about only taxing the wealthy. It is about everyone who can paying the taxes that will benefit everyone, including the people paying them. It is time we start to look at outcomes, and see that the money that is being taken from a paycheck can be put to things that everyone, even conservatives, need.

5. Liberal policies and ideas could never actually work.

Lastly, conservatives and many Americans believe that liberal policies could never work in the real world. So, equality can’t work in the real world? Lowering the disgusting income disparity, aggressive wage gaps, and poverty won’t work in the real world? A decent health care system, in which people get the coverage they deserve and doctor’s appointments don’t have to be pushed off because of a lack of money, won’t work in the real world? These policies can work in the real world, if people let them. Paying taxes will benefit our health care system, just as it has every other major industrialized country. Focusing on outcomes will benefit the country we all inhabit, just as it has every other industrialized country. Working to help the people who are trapped so deeply in poverty that they can’t escape will benefit the nation’s economy. There are radical liberals and there are radical policies, but discounting everything a liberal proposes because America is too selfish to acknowledge country wide ramifications is not a way to conduct politics.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
