Nathan's Take: Diss America

How can you make something great again when it is already in pretty good shape?

If another debate were to happen, when Donald Trump starts going on about how everything in this country is a total disaster, Hillary must lean into the microphone and say, "Wrrrrrroooooong."

Donald Trump's campaign is built on many fallacies, but the one we really need to debunk is that America is in such a desperate place that a wild card like Trump is worth the risk. Trump fans talk like they're living in a Western town where the bandits are so out of control that only a maverick gunslinger can save them.

I give Trump supporters a little credit, they know he's an asshole; it is hard to hide. They really just don't care. They'll admit that he's dangerous, and thin-skinned, and unhinged, and clinically insane, and an ego-maniac, a compulsive liar, a charlatan with the impulse control of a grease fire. But we have to take the risk because America is hanging by a thread. How do we know it is? Because Donald Trump told me.

-"The situation is worse than it has ever been before."

-"The generals have been reduced to rubble."

-"Our country is going to hell."

-"African Americans, Hispanics are living in hell. You walk down the street, you get shot."

-"The American Dream is dead."

He is insane. One of the popular memes on the right is that this election is called The Flight 93 election. As in the plane on 9/11 that crashed in Pennsylvania after the passengers rushed the cockpit. In other words, the things have gotten so bad, it's time to rush America's cockpit. As the creator of the metaphor put it, "You may not make it into the cockpit, but if you don't try, death is certain."

Really? President Hillary equals certain death. What do they think she is going to do? Pour lead into the water supply? Oh wait, that was the Republicans in Michigan.

So, there is that view and then there are the facts, remember them. Facts, so old school, aren't they? But the facts tell us that the country is actually in pretty good shape.

-Violent crime is at its lowest since 1970.

-The military is better funded now than it has ever been.

-Trump claims our healthcare is a horror show, but more Americans have insurance now then ever

-Fewer Americans are smoking

-Cancer rates are down

-Teen pregnancy is down

-Somehow Dick Cheney is still alive

-Eight years ago, we were losing 800,000 jobs a month, now we have added 14 million

-The stock market has come from under 7,000 to over 18,000

-Consumer sentiment is as high as it was in the 80's under Reagan.

The economy today is better than the one Mitt Romney promised to us in 2012 when he said he would get unemployment under 6%. Trump has said that great economist are saying that unemployment is 30-32%. No, every economist knows it's 5% because they get their numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, not from the Department of I'm Hearing. If Mitt Romney were running on this economy, the people with the Make America Great Again hats would have Re-Elect Romney stickers on their rascal scooters.

But the president isn't a white man with an R beside his name so it's Flight 93. I have read so much garbage about how Trump voters are hurting and we should respect their anger and pain. It's a myth that the media swallowed whole. The average Trump primary voter makes $72,000 a year. No more likely to be hurt by immigration, trade or to be out of work. Donald Trump doesn't really have solutions and his supporters don't really have problems. The only poor about them is their judgement. They're hysterical; they think President Tupac spent eight years turning the American Dream into Nightmare on Black Street and Hillary is going to finish the job. The reason why Trump is so popular with a certain type of voter is because they're kindred spirits. These white men, sitting at the end of the bar, nursing a gin and tonic because their penis doesn't work anymore and life didn't pan out in the way they wanted to. They sit there crabbing about how the system is rigged against them, America isn't winning anymore, we're getting pushed around by everybody, Mexico, women and blacks who have so many advantages over white people. At Republican Convention Trump said, "I am your voice." For once, he wasn't lying; he is their voice because they're whiny little bitches.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
