The Republican party has been pushing the Trump Administration to end Obama’s executive order entitled “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals,” or commonly referred to as ‘DACA’.
Many members of the GOP believe that ‘DACA’ is an overstep of the executive branches power and is yet another example of the Obama Administration attempting to expand the already big government. As of August 30th, President Trump has announced the pressure he intends to push on Congress to “do their job,” as he announced in a tweet.
Politico mentioned in one of their recent article that President Trump is facing strong warnings from GOP insiders that it would not be the right decision to scrap the program. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is pushing that Congress write this law, as it is their job to make immigration laws, not the executive branch's role.
According to Jonathan Karl’s tweet, there will be no new applications for DACA. Those with current permits expiring by 3/5/18 can get 2-year extensions. After that, no extensions.
Many members of the nation are unhappy with the Trump administration’s decision to end DACA. At first, I included myself in that population, as I don’t believe it to be a child’s fault that they are in a country illegally; typically they cannot make that decision. However, what I do understand is the desire to right the wrongs of a previous administration.
Right now, the GOP is not a party founded on racism and deporting all illegal immigrants or “dreamers” from the country. The fact of the matter is that it is not in the executive branches rights to create this type of legislation; that is the role of Congress. Yet, this GOP Congress can’t get anything done.
Right now, what needs to be focused on is the notion that Congress do their job to create a fair and legal ‘DACA’ law, not an overstepping executive order. Although this seems like a disaster right now, I hope that Congress understands the effect that being slow and unmotivated can have on thousands of “Dreamers”.
Let’s hope the new ‘DACA’ law isn’t a repeat of the GOP’s repeal and replace healthcare bill...
