Trump recently fired the head of the FBI investigation into Russia’s potential tampering with the 2016 Presidential election. When James Comey was fired by President Trump, it led to immediate speculation about the motive behind his firing. Given the fact that the FBI is currently investigating ties between Russia and the Trump administration with regards to the election, many people have asserted that he was fired as a result of Trump trying to impede the investigation, or at the very least due to the fact that Trump resents the investigation. The White House then released conflicting explanations for the firing, some of which confirm the theory that Comey was fired over the investigation, and some of which deny it.
If it is true that Trump did not fire Comey for that reason, then he is not doing a good job of acting like he had another motive. He is now considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller over the same reason. Mueller has a connection to the FBI investigation and to Comey. Congressional democrats have indicated that if Trump does fire Mueller, it may be grounds for the start of impeachment proceedings. It is getting increasingly difficult to argue that the Russians did not influence the election when Trump continuously fires everyone who is investigating it.
