I am in college and I have never been on a date. Whether you think that is embarrassing or not, it is the truth. I haven’t even been on a movie date or any simple date. I have been extremely single so far in my life. But, I’m not ashamed or embarrassed at all about it. Some people think it is a problem to be single. My family says it’s a problem. “Why haven’t you have met a nice girl?”

Mom and dad, I’ll find somebody don’t be all upset. No need to call and ask if I’ve found a special someone. I have met a lot of nice girls. I just have not met one that I have been in a relationship with. A lot of people say that it is really necessary to be in a relationship in high school. I don’t look at it like that. I think there are a lot of great things to being single. I don’t have any responsibilities of being attached to somebody. I don’t have to commit time to anyone. Sometimes it feels great to have no responsibilities relationship wise. I’m able to go out wherever and whenever I want, so that is an incredible thing. I can spend my time doing whatever I want. I don’t have to pretend to laugh at things that aren’t funny. And the best part about being single, I have a lot more money to spend on myself. I don’t have to spend money on movies that suck or expensive dinners.

The world we live in has preconceived notions about single people. I feel like our society always has this thought that you must have a significant other. This thought that if your single, that you will forever be alone and never be able to be happy in life. Also, that you must be able to have a relationship to move on with your life. With these thoughts, it makes single people feel empty or that they are losers. Plenty of people are able to have fun without having a significant other.

I’m not worried at all about getting into a relationship. My parents always tell me I’m a real “catch”. At least somebody thinks so. For now, I am a college student who is living independently. I focus on having fun with my friends and doing well in school.
