College is weird because it is a whole campus filled with the same age group, but let's face it, you can't live without your mom. In college, it is no different, every friend group needs a mom, and for my group of friends that was me. I don't even know when it happened, slowly, without me even realizing it, I became... the mom. No, don't be scared, the mom of the friend group is not any different or any less valuable to the friend group, if anything we are more important, they need us to survive.
One thing that I learned as the friend group's "mom" is that you are constantly worrying about everyone's whereabouts. At first I was surprised when I found myself texting all of my friends at 2am just to make sure they got back safe and sound from a night out. Sometimes I have a mom's worst nightmare: they don't respond. This can cause any mom of the friend group to have heart palpitations. Even if your friends try to be nice and say that this is your night to go crazy and they will take over the "mom duties", it doesn't work, a true mom will always make sure her children are being taken care of.
As I grew closer and closer with my friends, my "mom-ness" weirdly got stronger and stronger. I suddenly found myself carrying a bigger bag around so that my friends can leave their money and keys with me. Any good mom of the friend group would know you are also the one that calls about anything. Want take out? Your calling for it (and walking from the dorm to the parking lot to pick it up). Making plans? Your setting them up. Trust me this isn't a burden. It's just something the mom does, and us moms are happy to do them (because let's face it, they would be lost without us).
If you aren't the mom of the friend group, give your "mom" a break sometimes. We know, it's not always fun to answer our questions or respond to our texts, but know that we will always be there for you whether you want our help or not. We want what is best for you all of the time, so we don't mean for our voice to sound so maternal, it's just basic instinct at this point. I love all of my friends, and couldn't spend my time in college looking after any one else, and wouldn't want to.
