WHY WHY WHY WHY?
As many of you may have heard, numerous students at Clemson University were scrambling to find a place to live the first few days of the Fall 2014 semester. As if finding your classes, books and friends are stressful enough within the first few days of school- Clemson Lofts decided to send out an e-mail just DAYS before classes began, stating that construction is haulted, and no work is being done on the incomplete homes for students at Clemson.
I wish I could say I was an onlooker and that I could ask others about how much of a disadvantage this mishap must be….but I am sadly one of those tenants at Clemson Lofts that got jipped out of an apartment.
I received the e-mail two days before I was supposed to venture from my home in Chicago to Clemson to begin my junior year. My roommate and I had a decision- to terminate our lease and search for another place, or stay true to Clemson Lofts and hope for the best… What do you think we ended up doing?
Sad to say, I still have no permanent place to call home and I am contacting Clemson Lofts daily to see the progress in my apartment. I guess I should have listened to everyone saying, “Wow you are really going to sign a lease before your place is even built?" I thought this company would have learned from the Aspen Heights scandal the previous year, but in return, Clemson Lofts have much worse of a situation.
Going onto a month of my junior year without a home to call mine is the worst. I am living out of suitcases, not able to get comfortable and into a routine. Many other students who stuck with their lease are staying in a hotel, with friends or found other apartments to rent out from any range to a month or a full semester.
I guess I am #blessed to say that myself and six other girls were able to find a fully furnished lakehouse on Lake Hartwell for the month. Coming home from class and being able to lay on the dock, or waking up to the beautiful Clemson sunset over the lake is not that bad. But, still… It's the fact that this is a temporary being, and in a few weeks I will have to move myself to a brand new apartment, in the midst of Clemson Football games and exams & classes.
As bad as it may be, it could always be worse…That is, if I were completely homeless.
