If you are a follower of my writing, then you may have noticed a trend starting to form. I get addicted to things like compulsively checking my email to watching multiple hours of food videos before I go to bed with little to no explanation as to why I become obsessed with them. Just add this one to the list. I cannot stop watching HGTV, but I have no shame.
I realized that my addiction was getting out of hand when I went to the nail salon the other day. In fact, this is where the addiction stemmed from. Whenever I go to get my nails done, this channel is always on. The shows are all pretty much the same. They're just different people in different locations either looking to buy houses, to sell them, to redo them, or to flip them. I had never really cared about any of it before. I’m not buying a house anytime soon and the words that they use to describe things in the house are ones that I usually don’t even understand. Somehow, I got sucked into being obsessed with all of these shows. I followed "Property Brothers" on Twitter and I set HGTV to a favorite channel on my TV at home. Why am I doing this? It's mostly because I like to laugh at the ridiculous budgets that people come up with and to cringe at some of the heinous designs that some people love. You want to remodel your whole house and your budget is only $40,000?
So, I was watching HGTV the other day and, naturally, I was bonding with the other women in the salon. All of us were trying to decide which house was the best option out of the three on "House Hunters." I turned to my friend who came with me to get her nails done and said, “Is it bad that when they show the previews for some of these shows, I know what episode each of the clips comes from?” Not only did she confirm that I am, in fact, addicted, but I also had to admit that I have seen some of the episodes multiple times.
I think that the main appeal of these house shows is that it gives me a sort of escape. Every girl thinks about her future dream home and watching some of these shows put an actual property to that dream. It’s kind of fun to pick out certain rooms or layouts and think: "That’s what I want my future house to look like." It is also reassuring to watch the remodeling shows and know that, even if you end up in a house that’s not perfect, maybe you can get Chip and Joanna Gaines from "Fixer Upper" to come and help you. It’s also fun to watch "House Hunters International" and consider moving to Australia. If those people are doing it, then why can’t I? It’s really cool to see real estate in other countries and to see what the set-up is like when compared to the United States.
As I sit here, watching HGTV while I write this article, I’m admitting my addiction. However, this is one addiction that I’m not sure that I want to kick quite yet.
