For the past 18 of my 20 years of life, I have been an older sister. My sister Nora and I have always been close, but there have been times that tested our bond, as is expected for most siblings. Some of these times are a lot more common than others, which leads me to believe that they have been experienced by other sister duos as well.
1. Your younger sister WILL get hit on by many or all of your guy friends.
This is perhaps one of the worst things about having an attractive younger sister. The number of times I have heard “Dude, Emma, your sister is so hot!” or “Emma, Nora is such a babe!” is uncountable and admittedly, somewhat troubling, especially during her younger years (boys, you know who you are). Whether they are simply stating a fact or attempting to get under my skin, I have learned to take this inevitable occurrence in stride. Instead of responding by punching the dude in the face, I reply with, “I know, she really is.” Because she IS, and we are related after all, so this should totally be taken as a backhanded compliment, right?
2. Fighting over clothes will happen.
This doesn’t even have to be explained. For all you sisters out there, I’m sure you can relate to the perpetual struggle that is “sharing clothes." My closet has been raided an infinite number of times, and I know Nora could easily say the same about hers. There have been incidents where we have actually tried to pull clothing off each other once we noticed that the other was “wearing my new top!” Wars have been started over clothes. Just the other day I asked Nora if I could borrow a dress, and she said, and I quote, “Emma nobody has seen me in that yet, so no.” Yeah, sh*t gets so real.
3. Deciding who gets the car is a struggle.
This might not relate to all sisters, but it sure as hell is a frequent occurrence in the MacAnally household. Nora and I share a white 2001 Toyota Camry (super-plush, I know) that is falling apart at the seams. It has two hubcaps and bumper sticker residue, but its less-than-stellar appearance doesn’t deter us from fighting over who gets to drive it on any particular day.
4. Bad days are unavoidable.
We all have them. When I have mine, I tend to take it out on my sister and vice versa. It sucks, but I think we do it because we know that, no matter what, we will always be there for each other. That’s never necessarily a good reason to bitch out your best friend, but it’s a valid reason nonetheless.
Despite these drawbacks to having a little sister, the pros DEFINITELY outweigh the cons. Nora is the first person I go to when I need advice, especially when it has to do with boys. She also is always there whenever I watch a scary movie and need someone to cuddle with. She's always there to go on lunch dates or to accompany me to the pool when I explain how embarrassing it is to go alone. Although she can sometimes be the absolute WORST, she's more often the absolute best. Here's to you Nora Anne, now give me my top back!
