Well, what can I say—this summer has been amazing! In 10 days I've traveled half-way around the globe from America to London, England then onto Barcelona, Spain. Even though both England and Spain have monarchy systems, their living standards are very different. I witnessed a lot more poverty in Barcelona than in London. I won't go too much into the class differences; however, both places are beautiful. London has more beautiful landscapes and monuments around the city, whereas Barcelona's attractions are more concentrated in a small vicinity but their beauty is mysterious and has a Medieval ambience.
The biggest expenses on any trip are on transportation and hotel expenses. In my experience, traveling midweek tends to be cheaper than going on the weekends. Some, if not all airlines, will charge $30 each way if you are leaving and returning on the weekends.
Travel light! I know it is hard for us girls but we have to do it, my friends. Check with your airline, but the standard is one piece of check-in luggage, which has to be under fifty pounds—so go light. You are allowed one piece of carry-on luggage, but don't cram everything in it because you have to take it everywhere you go. And God forbid if the escalators are not working, and you have to carry it up those dreaded staircases, you won't look too hot doing so! If you travel around Europe and are using the cheap airlines such as RyanAir or EasyJet, you need to bring smaller than standard carry-on bags—again, check with your airline for the exact sizing or it could cost you a hefty fine.
There are several ways you can rest your tired feet cheaply, but never forgo your safety to save a few bucks. There are several hostels, especially in Europe, that would only cost as much as lunch. Before you book your housing accommodations, check out the location and read other people's reviews. There are hospitality exchanges where you could stay for free. The idea of this is that you hope one day to return the favor to your host.
Food—eat local, authentic foods. Eating local foods will not only be cheap, but they will be delicious. Be adventurous; you can always get a hamburger when you get home, but I bet you won't get real English fish and chips or seafood paella.
Lastly, getting around town—let me tell you, nothing will get you around more cheaply and reliably than your legs—walk, walk and walk. It is free and you are in control. However, when it's not possible to walk, use public transportation such as metro and buses. Do your homework, get information about metro or bus stations; understand the routes, time schedules, and pricing. Prices tend to be higher at rush hour, so avoid if you can.
Traveling is a privilege, and I have been fortunate to be able to travel to many beautiful countries from Asia to Europe. I always learn something new each time I travel. The experiences make me who I am today and make me appreciate what I have. I hope my travel tips are enlightening enough to trigger a travel bug in you.
Happy traveling!
