Has anyone ever wondered exactly how it feels to be an individual from the city being thrust into a small town? Ever tried to really get to the key components as to what it takes to be able to survive in a foreign town unlike your own? Does anyone ever question how it feels like to transition from big city life to town life? It is an amazing thing to be able to do for those who have to go through this whenever they decide to visit home if they go to school in a college town because not many can do such a thing easily or as regularly as some college students do.
When you have lived in a large city your whole life, you become accustomed to a certain way of doing things. Everything more often than not is expected to happen now, fast, and immediately. You can get almost anything with ease and speed because of the accessibility large cities. There are no waiting hours for a bus to go down the block, let's not forget calling roads blocks. There is the ability to interact with other cultures readily, though it's most likely at a comfortable distance for some people. You expect everywhere you go to have the same aspects of the city from the fast pace, hustle bustle mentality to the vast diversity that comes to the city. Then you learn that not everywhere is going to compare just quite like home does, where the pizza doesn’t taste right or the air just doesn’t have the same smug as it used to.
What about the modifications that the specific college town has to make in order to accommodate the vast amount of city people that are slightly invading their quiet, peaceful homes? They have to quickly be able to adjust their entire setting to keep up with the people who are coming into their homes so that they can coexist together comfortably. Suddenly traditions of a town are being twisted for the benefits of students and some of the history gets lost along the way. What becomes the goal of the town now, conform to changes in society or try to find a happy medium? And how can we gradually come together to make it a possibility?
