While everyone else is binge watching "Parks and Recreation" or "Gossip Girl" on Netflix (which I've totally done), I've been captivated by a series featuring three hilarious Canadian men traveling the world in search of the extraordinary.
My list on Netflix is a hodgepodge of documentaries about the amateur porn industry, hit TV series like "Supernatural," HGTV shows such as "Fixer Upper," and then...the hidden gem: "Departures." I added this show with a myriad of other documentaries about traveling to the Middle East last spring when I was trying to prepare for my trip to Israel. But it wasn't until my RA suggested this TV show that I remembered I had added it. He spoke so animatedly about this show that featured two guys just wondering the world in search of adventure, that I knew I'd better watch it.
So there I sat in my room one night, avoiding the pile of homework trying to catch my attention, and clicked the play button on the gorgeous mountain picture. That was it, I was hooked. From the coasts of Canada to the tundra of Antarctica, Scott Wilson and Justin Lukach had me laughing and crying and hoping. Hoping that one day soon, I would be able to travel the world in a similar fashion. But, enough about why I watched it, here's why anyone with a sense of wanderlust should watch it.
The personalities of Scott and Justin make the show everything. I don't think I've ever seen two people more different than these two. Justin is the goofy, fun-loving one who is always seeking an adrenaline rush (whether that's participating in a Muay Thai fight or bungee jumping). He's the one who will buy a dolphin puppet, name it Yoshi, and use it to tour a country. Scott, on the other hand, is all about the history and culture of the country he's visiting. From Scott, viewers learn about the significance of Petra in Jordan or the Angkor temples in Cambodia. This unlikely combination of personalities will have you hooked from the very first country.
The adventures these guys have will make you want to pack your bags and book an airline ticket tonight. Every country is a different adventure for these guys. A three day river boat trip on the Amazon. Camping out with desert-dwelling Bedouins in Jordan. Climbing the highest mountain in North Africa while in Morocco. Playing tag in a massive abandoned city in Libya. Even within the same country, the adventures are completely different depending upon what part they are in. In Mongolia, they spent the first part of their trip with the Tsatsaan Reindeer tribe of northern Mongolia. The second part of their trip was spent four-wheeling through the Gobi Desert. While in their home country of Canada, the first trip was spent going from coast to coast, and the second was all about pushing as far north as they could to the Arctic Circle. Seriously, their adventures would make Bilbo Baggins jealous.
They don't just visit a country to see it, they visit to understand it. These are not the type of guys who would be satisfied with sticking to the typical tourist destinations of a country. They want true authenticity. So, in that spirit, they seek out the places and spaces often not visited by the usual tourist. This is what drives them to spend time with the Amazonian people of Brazil, reindeer tribes of Mongolia, tobacco farmers of Cuba, village people of Cambodia, and so many other amazing people. They also experience a variety of other religions and their holidays. They were a part of the Diwali festival in India and a Santeria ceremony in Cuba. They even visited Buddhist temples in the remote parts of the Himalayan mountains. They don't just visit a country, they visit the traditions and people that are the very heart of the country.
Andre Dupuis' skills with a camera will make you think you can major in photography...but then realize that you can never be as good as him, and you aren't really sure how to work a camera that size (or any camera at all for that matter). Andre is the one person that you usually don't even know is there. But without him, there really would be no Departures. One of the most appealing parts of this show is that it features some of the most breathtaking imagery I have ever seen. Sand dunes in the Sahara Desert, majestic mountains in New Zealand, beautiful beach shots in a myriad of countries. Even though I'm not in the country, I feel as if I have already visited because of the amazing cinematography.
Thanks Scott, Justin, and Andre for reminding me how many adventures I haven't had. But, no really, thank you. Thank you for reminding me to travel while I am young and able. Money, careers, relationships can work themselves out. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your incredible journey. This truly is a must see show!
