The transition from a big city to a small town can be a big change for an individual and also can be very difficult to cope with. One of the most common differences that i always felt was easy to spot out was how people dressed in a farm town compared to a city. From the city I came from, the fashion trends are more leaned towards the latest clothing fashions that are trending now a days such as kakis with a buttoned down shirt and sperrys.
From where I grew up, the hipster fashion played a big part in the city. Seeing people wearing beanies, scarfs and flannels was a common thing you would see as you walked the busy streets of downtown, whereas in a small town you will see people walking around in in boot legged jeans with a plaid shirt and cowboy boots. Another big change that city folks have to deal with is the lack of tall skyscrapers and people. Yes, I know small towns can have a lot of people, but the population between the two certainly differs. A city person is used to seeing crowds of people walking on the streets going to where they need to be. A city person is used to hearing the sound of many cars and police sirens and all the other common noises the city life produces. Whereas in a small town, there are less cars, less chaos and it is very likely to see the same person more than once in a day.
As I mentioned before, city folks are used to being surrounded by tall buildings that light up the city at night. In a small town the most lights you will see is when you drive down mainstream where all the small shops are.
For a guy who calls tall buildings and hipsters walking down the street with a cigarette home, this can be a big culture shock indeed. However, there are of course advantages of moving to a small town. One of which i found out myself is that small towns are perfect for star gazing. When I first came to this town my friend and she told me she wanted to go on the outskirts of town to go star gazing. Coming from a city where the lights block out the stars, I was very excited to go. When we got there we laid down and starred up at the sky and couldn't believe it.
Millions upon millions of stars just twinkling in the dark sky above us. stars that I only saw in my high school astronomy class. As I stared up into the night sky I simply said to myself "can't find this back home!"
Say what you will about the fashion trends and the population of small towns but I believe transitioning to one can really help an individual grow as a person. I think that the close community and the people you will meet will make you more humble and most importantly, it will teach you to appreciate the small things in life.
