A Transgender Society

About a hundred years ago, cases of trans people, including Lili Elbe, came about. Born in Denmark, Elbe was a Danish painter. She was the first woman to have a sex reassignment surgery, and be successfully identified as a trans-woman. Almost a century later, trans people are being noticed more. Transgender is a general term for an individual who does not associate with the sex they were born with. Societal attitudes, the media and basic education about the characteristics of trans individuals, show a new found visibility.

To start off, societal attitudes are the main influence of this new exposure of transgenders. Society has indeed became more accepting of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. Politicians have also made their mark by voicing their own opinions, mostly positive and accepting. Recently, President Obama has voiced his thoughts on marriage equality, which included the action of new bills being written. These bills outlined the protection of trans individuals from any discrimination in the workplace. The campaigning politicians, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, have also actively spoken about LGBT individuals and have began to base their campaigns around these communities.

The contribution of the media gives a multitude of support to trans individuals: Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, even Facebook. Not only is there support coming from these social media outlets, a lot of "media stars" are announcing their sexual orientation such as Gigi Lazzarato and Ingrid Nilson. Television shows like "Orange is the New Black", have also represented trans individuals.

Education also plays a role for transgender visibility. Caitlyn Jenner has been a monumental advocate by using her celebrity status to educate people all over the world about transgender and LGBT individuals. Caitlyn was recently recognized for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Caitlyn gave an acceptance speech, and here are a couple notable mentions.

"Trans people deserve something vital — they deserve your respect."

"It's about all of us accepting one another. We're all different — it's not a bad thing."

Caitlyn Jenner's show, "I Am Cait", is a documentation of her journey of transitioning into a woman, while educating everyone else in society.

Undoubtedly, there are positive and negative effects of this particular exposure. For instance, one positive effect is easily noticed as a decrease in suicide rates among the transgender communities.

One negative effect is an increase of hate crimes or murders of transgender individuals. For instance, reports in the Time magazine show the rate of hate crime at its highest, 15, and has never historically been higher.

The more representation and recognition of transgender people will slowly but surely allow hate and ignorance of society to subside and eventually bring acceptance of everyone. It is important to educate yourself on the new norm and become knowledgeable of the facts.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
