“Transformers: The Last Knight” is a movie that critics hated, some even called it toxic, but I would have to disagree with them. "Transformers" was a great film that really does a good job setting up the future of the franchise while also wrapping up some old plot points from the original three movies.
*BEWARE SPOILERS ARE AHEAD *
“Transformers: The Last Knight” combines the King Arthur stories with the Transformers. The opening scene is King Arthur leading a battle and he is waiting for the wizard, Merlin (Stanley Tucci), to provide his “magic,” which his magic was actually a staff from an ancient Transformer inside a crashed space ship. The staff that Merlin is given is what would later be known as “The Staff of Merlin.” The film addresses the fact that the story of King Arthur was usually regarded as a myth by most, but then Sir Edmond Burton (Anthony Hopkins) states that he is part of an order that is meant to keep the history of Transformers a secret and that Transformer have been on Earth a long time, which goes back to the 2009 movie “Revenge Of The Fallen.”
Throughout the film, there is this sense of “the end is near.” Cybertron, the Transformers own planet, is actually considered an exo-planet and it is on a crash course with Earth. Optimus Prime’s creator, Quintessa, a half-biological and half-Transformer, believes that Earth is home to Unicron, which is a giant planet-sized Transformer. She corrupts Optimus Prime and renames him Nemesis Prime, making him hell-bent on destroying Earth to ensure the survival of his homeworld. Through out the film, we see horns coming up through the Earth’s surface, which is a key characteristic of Unicron.
The series sees the return of some characters such as Major Lennox (Josh Duhamel), Sector Seven Agent Seymour Simmons (John Turtorro) and even a visual cameo by Sam Witwitwicky (Shia LaBeouf). Sam’s fate is revealed, and it is implied that he is dead. It was great to see some old faces return as well; it connects the two trilogies by more then just the Autobots and Decepticons. The only human character returning from the “Age of Extinction” was Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), while it introduces a new character, Izabella (Isabella Moner), a 14 year-old scavenger and orphan living in the ruins of a stadium in
The final action sequence in the film was one of the greatest scenes I have seen in a while, with pieces of Cybertron dragging across the surface of Earth to try and reveal Unicron, and Megatron and the Decepticons trying to get the staff for Merlin. It made for a great action sequence and there was even a zero gravity scene. The score by Steve Jablonsky was great and was the best score to date. All action sequences were great and were done in usual
The after credits scene to the film sets up Transformers 6 with Quintessa after surviving her encounter with the Autobots. She walked along the Egyptian desert by one of Unicron’s horns disguised as a human and she offers her help to a person studying the horns, claiming she knows how to destroy them. It would appear that the “Transformers” series is going to become like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Cinematic Universe. They have plans for a Bumblebee spin-off as well as a bunch of other movie projects with the Transformers name attached to it. I am very excited to see where they take the next movie as Earth being Unicron is something that will make a very interesting film, if done correctly. "Transformers: The Last Knight" is in theaters now.
