After high school, most of us cannot wait to go away for school and to start over. I looked forward to leaving my hometown and starting the next chapter in my life. I went to a school an hour and a half away from home, but the first week in, I knew I wanted to transfer. I decided to take responsibility and transfer back home; I told myself I would make the best of it as a commuter.
Transferring was something that was hard for me to do. However, it is the best decision for those who need to take responsibility. Regardless of other peoples’ opinions, you need to make choices that are best for yourself. Not everyone needs to understand why we make the choices we do, as long as we know that it is the best choice for ourselves.
Since I transferred, I have made decisions that have led me to some of the happiest moments of my life so far. I decided to go out for a sorority where I got my Big, who is someone I consider my sister. I also met some of my best friends. The friends I made are the ones you can call in the middle of the night. The ones who will wipe away your tears and hand you a glass of wine to get your mind off of it. The friends who will make a 4 a.m. run to McDonalds with you. The friends who knew what you were thinking before you could even find the right words to say. The friends that let me be their fifth roommate. These are the kind of friends I had searched for my whole life.
I found out parts about myself that I never knew existed. I met someone who taught me that fear is something you can only overcome, and that you should never let fear control your life. I’ve learned how to be brave and make choices that might scare me. And most importantly, I’ve learned to love myself before I can love anyone else.
College is something that changes all of us, and over the past year and a half I was brave enough to make choices that led me to where I am today. You can always change a part of your life if you are not content with it. No one should settle for anything less than what they deserve, which is true happiness.
A year and a half ago, I would never have thought I would be where I am today. I transferred in hopes of being happier and making friends that would last a lifetime. Transferring was one of the hardest decisions I had to make, but it was one of the most positive influences in my life so far. This doesn’t just relate to transferring schools, but other parts of your life that you want to change, whether it's joining an organization or club, doing something you are passionate about, or making that one hard decision that will make you happy.
