Comic Con gathered once more this past week in San Diego, and with it, geeks around the world were overwhelmed by celebrities, performances, movie news, and most important of all, new trailers! Marvel, DC, Warner Brothers and more were delighted to show off the big things that they have in store for fans in the next coming year. So without further ado, here are five of the trailers that Comic Con released to the world.
1.) Wonder Woman
DC has a lot of work to do. After "Batman v Superman" proved to be an unpopular film amongst critics and fans alike (there were a few saving graces here in there, but the bad sadly outweighed the good) they need someone to clean up the mess. That's part of Wonder Woman's strength. Having the story take place in WWI allows for the writers of this movie to completely ignore the events of "Batman v Superman." It's a clean slate for DC. The bright colors of Wonder Woman's costume are fresh and exciting and seem to resonate with a "Marvelesque" playfulness. The flashing back and forth between earth and what we can assume is Themyscira tells us that this movie will have more than one battlefield, and thank god. I'm tired of earth being destroyed, let's take the fight somewhere else. It's so fun to see fan favorites like the Lasso of Truth being utilized in this trailer. It's little things like that that make the fans go nuts, and I'm going crazy over here. Amongst all of the superhero movies that have been made, Wonder Woman is the first to focus on a female heroine as the lead, and this trailer knows it. When she told Chris Pine "What I do is not up to you" I couldn't help but punch my fist in the air in celebration. Marvel has led DC in a lot of ways when it comes to film, but DC got this one right. Way to go DC. "Wonder Woman" hits theaters next summer, and I'll be first in line.
2.) Kong: Skull Island
I've been following production of this movie for some time now. After 2014's "Godzilla" came out, the rumor began to surface that a King Kong vs Godzilla movie was in the works, and I was all for it. Who doesn't want to see those two titans battle it out? I loved "Godzilla" and wanted more giants. But the folks at Legendary decided to make it a fair fight. If Godzilla got a staring role in his own movie, then so does Kong. "Kong: Skull Island" is supposedly an origin story of the great ape, and with a star-studded cast of Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. Jackson, I'm ready to sit through yet another origin story. I replayed the out of focus shot of the dragonfly with the choppers several times. If this movie is full of fake outs like that, it's gonna be a hell of a ride. Kong looks absolutely massive (though we never get a full shot, well played Legendary) and the characters of this story have every right to be afraid. Even if this movie is just another "let's blow stuff up and level a city" it's a stepping stone to the "King Kong v Godzilla" movie we deserve. Count me in. "Kong: Skull Island" hits theaters this March.
3.) Doctor Strange
In the interest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general, I'm excited about this movie. The fact that it's going to add to the greater picture of what Marvel has been painting with these films makes me want to see it, but so far, I'm not thoroughly exhilarated by this movie's release. Sure, I love Benedict Cumberbatch and can't WAIT to add him to the wonderful cast of characters that Marvel has, but it just feels like this movie is starting from scratch. Then again, I felt the same way about "Ant-Man" and I ended up loving that movie. The effects look divine and the magic looks awesome, so this movie will look nice at nothing else. Also, let's not forget that it's 2016 and this movie has Tilda Swinton playing an Asian character. That just doesn't sit well with me. This movie drops in November, hopefully, it surprises me.
4.) Justice League
I don't know guys, I think I'm on board with Batfleck. I love that Batman is taking charge here, acting as the captain of this team of supers. Heard Wonder Woman work together like talent agents, looking for the best of the best to join their ranks, and the chemistry looks friendly and opens the door for some funny moments. Ezra Miller looks like he'll be a great Barry Allen, and is going to add some much needed comic relief to the DC Universe. Cyborg doesn't get much face time, but I bet a follow-up trailer will feature him more soon. And then there's Aquaman. Aquaman steals the show in this trailer, with his quiet demeanor and brooding looks, he looks like a force to be reckoned with. DC seems set on proving to the world that this hero can do more than "talk to fish". I can't wait to see how Aquaman works on the big screen. "Justice League" is still a little over a year away but it's worth getting excited about. It'll be here November of 2017.
5.) Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
I love this trailer. We finally get a good look at a few beasts, and Colin Farrell, one of my all time favorite actors, gets a little screen time. Jacob and Newt prove that they're going to be a fun to watch duo, while Porpentina accompanies them on their quest. This trailer makes it clear that this is not a conflict that has simply two sides. This will be a triangle of muggles (no majes technically but I refuse to say that) and wizards against Newt, who is attempting to recapture his beasts. The trailer ends with Jacob saying a line that the world has been saying ever since Sorcerer's Stone was released; "I wish I were a wizard". Don't we all Jacob, don't we all."
So which movies are you excited for? Which trailers worked best for you? Let me know!
