When Thoughts And Prayers Aren't Enough: The Oregon Mass Shooting

The lamentations of the American people reverberate through and through this week as yet another school shooting rocks the country -- this time, taking place in a rural stretch of southern Oregon.

Early Thursday morning, 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer opened fire on the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg. The rampage left 9 dead and 9 wounded in an event that has not only forced the country to again rethink “sufficient” gun safety laws, but consider how commonplace these occurrences seem to be.

President Obama, in a heartfelt and sentimental message, expressed his dismay at the continued gun violence across the nation, going as far as to call the mass shooting, “routine.” Stating that “Each time this happens i’m going to bring this up. We can do something about it.”

“As I said just a few months ago and I said a few months before that, and I said each time we see one of these mass shootings, our thoughts and prayers are not enough.” the president added. “It’s not enough.”

Mercer had 13 weapons on his person, including 6 legally bought guns, when he opened fire on campus Thursday. He was shot by police in a subsequent shootout and died en route to the hospital. Described as “troubled” by others, and even expressing interest in other mass shootings according to his online history, Mercer has become yet another example of a mental illness case that slipped through the cracks.

The shooting, which marks the 45th school shooting this year, and the 142nd school shooting overall since the 2012 Newtown, Conn. massacre, has become an almost daily occurrence on American soil. Once again, as the topics of mental illness and easy access to guns come into play, it begs the question: where do we draw the line on gun violence? Are there any easy answers?

The straw man arguments of “ban all guns” or “crazy people shouldn’t own guns” have been stated over, and over, and over again, and neither would actually solve the issue. We must not shift the blame around. The problem, it seems, lies much deeper than standard gun restrictions.

Interwoven within the very fabric of our culture -- whether that be economically, politically or socially; lies America's obsession with guns. This obsession runs deep within the roots of our dark past, and it has become so entangled within the standard American lifestyle that it’s hard to know if we’ll ever let go.

The answers we seek will not come easy. Do sensible restrictions need to be employed? Of course. But we need to do more. Improvement on the mental health front, including diagnosis and care for one, and reasonable gun laws on the other. Finding a compromise here is key to preventing more tragedies.

Unfortunately, as it is now, guns have become a strong cultural phenomenon here in America, and this fetish does not seem like it’ll go away anytime soon.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
