On the evening of Oct. 17, people across the nation turned on NBC to see Tracy Morgan's smiling face looking back at them, finally back at home in "Saturday Night Live" after a year of absence.
Not wanting to waste any time, Morgan quickly addressed the elephant in the room - the 2014 accident that took a friend and nearly his own life.
"I was in a terrible car accident a year ago," the comedian said. "It was awful, but it also showed me how much love and support I have in this world."
Morgan then proceeded to act in a sketch that reunited him with the "30 Rock"cast, in which his character, Tracy Jordan, nearly died.
In 2014, Morgan was in critical condition after a Walmart truck going 20 miles over the speed limit in New Jersey rear-ended his limo carrying himself and his friends, resulting in one fatality.
Morgan underwent several treatments for traumatic brain injury, including daily speech, cognitive, vocational and physical therapies.
A month after the accident, Morgan sued the company for negligence, as the driver of the truck had been working non-stop for nearly 24 hours without sleep or rest and should not have been on the road.
It was in May 2015 that the two sides came to an agreement and Walmart settled the lawsuit with an undisclosed amount.
"Our thoughts continue to go out to everyone that was involved in the accident," said Greg Foran, Walmart U.S. president and CEO. "While we know there is nothing that can change what happened, Walmart has been committed to doing what's right to help ensure the well-being of all of those who were impacted by the accident. We worked closely with Mr. Morelli, and we are pleased to have reached an amicable settlement that ends this litigation. We are deeply sorry that one of our trucks was involved."
It's great to see this funny man back and smiling on SNL! His monologue, while somewhat lighthearted, definitely evoked emotion from many watching.
Remember to always stay safe on the road!
