Arcade Fire entered the world on a dark note. Their debut album entitled “Funeral” released in 2004, was partly inspired by the death of many of the bands’ family members while recording album. Over their 13-year career however, the band have perhaps come full circle. The second single from their upcoming fifth album is an anti-suicide song called “Creature Comfort.” The song is built off a frenzied synth line, similar do the sonic palette of their last album “Reflektor”, that then opens up into a bright dance song that the band is known for. Lead singers Win and Regine sing back and forth to each other in a call and response fashion. “Assisted suicide / she dreams about dying all the time / she told me she came so close / filled up a bathtub and put on our first record” Win sings on the second verse in a moment of reflection and honesty. It’s important that they reference “Funeral” because for all of the emotional baggage, that album had moments of hope. It is that hope that allowed for this girl to be alive to tell Win essentially how their first album prevented her suicide. The song serves as a new beacon of hope to those who are contemplating taking their own lives. It, like many of the songs on “Funeral” have underlying themes of perseverance, combined with the bands’ knack for writing sprawling anthems, makes “Creature Comfort” an emotional and powerful track.
