The holiday season is officially upon us. While some people are staunch believers that Christmas starts after Thanksgiving, others don't think it's so bad to crank up the holiday tunes just after Halloween. If you're on the former side of this argument, I'm here to tell you that you can't judge people who love Christmas music. Here's why.
First of all, Christmas music is an automatic mood-booster. If you're having a bad day, turn on some Christmas music and I can basically guarantee you that you'll feel way better. If someone wants to listen to some "Jingle Bells" to make them happy, who are you to tell them no? Christmas means happiness and happiness means people being nice, so why wouldn't you want that?
Also, sometimes you need a reminder that there are better times ahead. Christmas means a month away from the constant responsibilities and stress of college or work, so there's nothing wrong with looking forward to it. When you're 3 pages into a 7 page paper or presentation at 3 A.M. the day it's due, sometimes you need to remember that it'll all be over in just a few weeks. If Christmas music is what it takes to get you through, I say go for it.
Next up, listening to Christmas music doesn't mean you're skipping Thanksgiving. If there were catchy Thanksgiving songs that people could jam to, I'm sure they would listen to those instead. If you think now is too early, you don't have to listen to Christmas music or put up any decorations. But it doesn't mean that you can judge other people for getting excited about one of the most publicized and celebrated holidays. It's an exciting time of year, so there's nothing wrong with people getting pumped about it, no matter the date.
To those singing "Frosty the Snowman" in mid-November, you do you. I'm here to tell you that no one else's opinion matters; if Christmas music makes you happy, who cares what anyone else says? Christmas music helps you find the light at the end of the tunnel. It's a sign that better times are on the way and that the most wonderful time of the year is just around the corner. If it makes you feel good, you should definitely crank up the Christmas jams.
While I might not be rocking out to Christmas tunes just yet, I definitely understand why people are now, in the middle of November. There's nothing wrong with it, so don't be the Grinch who tells these people what they can and can't listen to. After all, it's not their fault that snow and reindeer make for better song lyrics than pilgrims and turkey.
