During my middle school years, I would come home from school and turn on the TV only to find that the infamous Grey's Anatomy was on yet again. Every time I caught a glimpse of the blue scrubs, I changed the channel as fast as humanly possible. "How could anyone watch this garbage?" I thought. One day, however, I got sick of hearing about Seattle Grace Hospital everywhere I went, every single day. "Cristina this, George that..." My friends told me to give it a chance, so I finally gave in and watched the first episode. It didn't take long before I fell victim to the Grey's plague that swept the nation. It was that easy, I was hooked. " Netflix and Chill" had a whole new meaning to me that summer, as I laid in bed and watched the show during every single second of free time I had. Two-hundred some episodes, thousands of tears, hundreds of laughs, numerous episode reviews with friends, and tons of newfound medical knowledge later, I realized that the show I once made fun of was now what I live and breathe. So why has Grey's Anatomy become something I cannot live without?
1. Meredith and Derek's relationship is what we all long for.
I mean, what woman wouldn't want a Dr. McDreamy to be the father of their children?? Meredith and Derek's love for each other is unconditional, and seeing how their relationship matured since their first meeting at the bar makes my heart just melt. They give us the hope that true love exists for us all, no matter how dark and twisted we may be.
2. When you watch the drama unfold, you realize that your life is actually pretty normal.
Plane crashes, hospital shootings, electrocutions, getting hit by buses, violent attacks by patients, ferry accidents, miscarriages, live bombs implanted in patients, and finding out that you have a long lost sister are all just the beginnings of a day in the lives of the Grey's characters. Makes your flat tire and coffee stain on your new shirt seem like not a big deal anymore, right?
3. It always keeps you guessing.
Just when you think you know what is going to happen next, Shonda Rhimes pulls a fast one on you. Things are never boring to say the least...Just be sure to have 911 on speed dial for when your heart begins to stop as you watch the life of your favorite character flash before your eyes.
4. You get a short, fun anatomy lesson every episode.
After watching the first twelve seasons, you'll be walking and talking like a world renowned doctor. It teaches you all about the human body, and you can bring up something you learned in the last episode to make yourself sound smart in front of your friends or family.
5. You get a good cry in every once in awhile.
If you're ever in the mood to cry, just turn on Grey's and it'll do the trick real fast. When you are done, you'll be lucky to have made it through the episode using only one box of tissues.
6. You can become a certified surgeon without attending med school.
Grey's provides a free and entertaining tutorial on how to properly remove someone's appendix. The patient flatlined...No problem, just push 10 of epi.
7. You get to live vicariously through Meredith and Cristina's friendship.
Meredith and Cristina bring friendship to a whole new level. They make us want to bring out the best in our person and remind us that sometimes, we just have to dance it out.
8. There is a LOT of eye candy.
Come on, did you see the cast? Tons of extremely attractive, charming, rich surgeons in the shot at all times. Did I say attractive?
9. The characters are lovable.
But, if for some strange reason you come to hate any of them, no worries. They'll probably be killed off soon anyways.
10. It's full of helpful life advice.
Seeing families rekindle after a major argument or years of not talking, watching the doctors forgive each other after a horrible breakup or custody battle, and observing the characters learn from their mistakes are all so inspiring. Plus, Chief Webber's heart-to-heart talks are better than the pieces of advice you get from fortune cookies.
