As finals come to a close and school ends for the semester, it is time to go home and rest over winter break. After enjoying holiday celebrations with family and spending time with friends, you may get bored and start the hunt to find something to do. December and January are the prime movie release months, so there is definitely something at the theaters for everyone. If you are not sure what to choose, here is a short list of some of the top films.
1) "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" (Already in theaters)
If you haven't seen this yet and are a big fan of the Hunger Games, you need to see this over your break. In the final film for the series, Katniss is back and ready to fight the capitol in this thrilling, exciting battle that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It was definitely one of my favorites of the series.
2) "The Good Dinosaur" (Already in theaters)
Another breathtaking Pixar film in which a young dinosaur tries to make his way home while being accompanied by his pet human named Spot. This is a great film to take your younger brothers and/or sisters to, especially if you are babysitting over the holidays.
3) "Snervous Tyler Oakley" (Dec. 11)
If you are a fan of Youtubers, then you have probably heard of Tyler Oakley. This documentary follows the hilarious and successful life of Youtuber Tyler Oakley on his "Slumber Party" tour. If you love to laugh, then this film is a must for your Winter break.
4) "In the Heart of the Sea" (Dec. 11)
The tale of "Moby Dick" is back in this feature film following the infamous New England vessel, Essex, set in 1820. Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, and Cillian Murphy, star in this classic tale as they battle the mammoth-sized monster living in the depths of the sea.
5) "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (Dec. 18)
The hype around this movie has been crazy this year and the film is finally set to release this month, December 18. Thirty years after the Galactic Empire was defeated, Han Solo and his friends are back in another adventure facing a new enemy and his Storm Troopers. This is a film that will definitely be on everyone's conversation list, so I recommend seeing it over your Winter break.
6) "Sisters" (Dec. 18)
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, a hilarious duo star in this comedy, "Sisters." The two SNL all-stars play siblings just looking to relive their glory days by throwing one last party. This film is perfect for a girl's night out!
7) "Joy" (Dec. 25)
Jennifer Lawrence is back in this family drama releasing on Christmas Day. The film follows a girl, Joy (Lawrence), over four generations as she rises to the top in business and in her family. The film also stars Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro and is expected to be a must-see film.
8) "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride" (Jan. 5)
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson return in this classic tale and solve incredible mysteries based on stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle. This film will be released in theaters, but will also be featured in a 90 minute special on PBS on January 1st, so check your local listings in the new year.
9) "The 5th Wave" (Jan. 15)
Based on a best-selling novel, the film stars Chloe Grace Moretz on her desperate journey to save her brother and the Earth. If you like action thrillers, aliens, and end-of-the-world dramas, then this is a must watch over your winter break.
10) "Kung Fu Panda 3" (Jan. 29)

As your winter break comes to a close, you might be in need of a funny, light-hearted film before heading back to school. The famous kung fu panda is back and now in search of his biological father. For any panda lovers, this film is a must.
