With Halloween just around the corner, there has been spookiness filling the air since the beginning of October, with pumpkin
carving, watching scary movies, shopping for Halloween costumes and attending haunted
houses. This is the time of year when it is acceptable to want to go to a
house, and get scared out of your mind and scream like a little girl. I i’s
completely normal to want to be chased by fake zombies and scary clowns. Living
in San Diego and Southern California, in general, there are numerous haunted
houses to attend, some are much scarier than others.
1. The Haunted Hotel, San Diego. I have attended this
haunted house and can say it is very well done; it will definitely scare you
and make you scream. I am not one to get scared easily, and love all things
scary and Halloween related, so finding this spookiness was the icing on the
cake for this Halloween. The Haunted
Hotel is the longest running haunted house in San Diego. It has been acclaimed as one of the top 13 haunted houses in America by Haunt World Magazine and was featured in America Haunts IV on the Travel Channel in 2009.
This year’s
theme takes you through the creepiest doll island you will ever come across.
You will come face-to-face with The Dissectors as well as climbing aboard a
Clown Subway. There are zombies who try to attack you, and finding your way
through this hotel is no simple task. With frightening creatures hiding in the
dark, there is no telling when or what will pop up next.

2. Blackout, Los Angeles. Blackout is not your typical
everyday haunted house that has zombies and creepy dolls popping out at you.
This haunted house is a psychological thriller that really gets inside your
head and brings some of your deepest fears to life. The first location for this
house was in New York and the creators then decided to also have one in LA and
Chicago.
There are
some rules for this house;you have to be 18 years or older, you must sign
a waiver, you are given a “safety word” if you feel you can’t finish and most
importantly, you must go through alone. Yes that is right, alone. There is no
holding onto your best friend as you stumble through the dark, this is a fend
for yourself and survive your darkest fears type of house. I have read
numerous reviews on this house and it sounds like it would be an experience you
could never forget. Walking through a house with only a flashlight and
experiencing encounters you only saw in the scariest of movies really makes you
question how much you can handle.

3. McKamey Manor, San Diego. McKamey
Manor is not your typical haunted house, either, and compared with Blackout, it
makes Blackout look like a piece of cake. First thing to know about this house is it
lasts all year; the reason why is because it takes two to four hours just to
walk through it. The house is completely free, but you must sign up on a
waiting list and wait to receive an invitation. It is recommended to be in top
physical condition for this house because it will test your limits to the breaking
point. You are allowed to walk through with a partner, which makes the
experience a tad less terrifying.
Basically,
going through this house puts you in your own horror story. Facing things you
only see in the scariest of horror movies and making you relive them. It
can take up to four hours, or maybe more, to walk through the house depending on
how you deal with fear. There is also no safe word so no matter how many times
you say you want to leave, the only way out is to complete it all.

If you feel you are brave enough to experience such haunting
experiences I highly recommend attending these haunted houses. Attending
Blackout or McKamey Manor, and walking through it completely, makes you one of
the select few who have completed it and truly faced your fears.
