Everyone enjoys a good Halloween movie throughout the spooky month of October. Personally, horror films aren’t my favorite thing to binge watch during this season because I get scared so easily. However, I do have a list of some of my favorite, non-horror, films that still hit me right in my spooky heart.
1. Beetlejuice
This one is an obvious fan favorite and classic film. Honestly, if you haven’t seen this movie, what really are you doing? This one made it into my top five favorite Halloween movies because it has the perfect amount of comedy scenes to balance out the scary ones. The actor that played Beetlejuice did a fantastic job in creating a very creepy character with a comedic tone.
2. The Haunted Mansion
Personally, I think this one has always been completely underrated for how good it is. This is also one that I find to have a good balance between the horror and humor aspects. It has more scary scenes compared to Beetlejuice in my opinion but Eddie Murphy does a fantastic job by adding a little comedic relief.
3. Corpse Bride
As an avid Tim Burton fan, it’s obvious that this movie is in my top five picks. Almost every movie of Burton’s I watch, I completely fall in love with it and this one is no different. However, this film is unlike the other two because it lacks in the comedy department. This movie carries a much more serious tone to it in order to tell its story. What I like about this film is the fact that it is a stop-motion, animated film. This gives it a slight adolescent feel, but the story itself is made for all ages.
4. Halloweentown
The one you’ve all been waiting for! Anyone who was born in the late 90’s to early 2000’s knows that the Halloweentown series is a binge-watching session you cannot sit out on. I grew up with these films so they have a very near and dear place in my spooky heart. My personal favorite is Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge BUT that doesn’t mean you should only watch that one. Each of the films has their own mystery aspect to them with hilarious commentary to complement each character.
5. The Nightmare Before Christmas
My fifth and final movie selection is definitely my own personal favorite. Tim Burton, again, completely knocks it out of the park with this film. This movie is also a stop-motion film which only adds to its awesomeness. My favorite aspect of this movie is the music. You will not be disappointed by not only the musical performances throughout but also the background orchestra that is constantly playing. It is a tradition with my sister to watch this film every year and will continue to live on forever. The best part about watching movies is for a small portion of time you escape reality and get to live in a completely different world, especially in Halloween themed movies. Also, it is a great bonding experience and tradition to have with your family and friends because it brings everybody a little closer together. I hope you watch at least one of these movies and feel the same amount of joy that I get from them. If not only to enjoy a good film, but to spend time with your loved ones.
