Riverdale, a CW Netflix Original, has taken the binge-watching world by storm with a riveting and suspenseful storyline. It seemed as though just when you thought it couldn't get any more twisted, it did. Riverdale made its viewers feel something. The 13 episode series kept the audience on their toes while also teaching them lessons without them even realizing. So for all you Riverdale fanatics out there: here are the top 5 things that I've learned through this series:
1. Archie: "Betty, are you okay?"
Betty: "I'm supposed to say yes, that's what the nice girl always says, but no. No, I'm not. I want to be. I thought I could be, but it's too much, too fast Archie."
- Betty displays strength and courage. She teaches the viewers that it is okay not to be okay and just how important it is to relay what you're feeling inside of just burying it deep down and pretending to be okay. Always remember: never hide your feelings, express yourself and make yourself clear like Betty did, even if it's not what is typically "expected" of you.
2. Veronica: "I know what you need, Cheryl, because I know who you are. You would rather people fear you than like you, so you traffic in terror, and intimidation. You're rich so you've never been held accountable. But, I'm living proof. That certainly, that entitlement you wear on your head like a crown? It won't last."
-Veronica stands up for what she believes in and puts people in their place. She doesn't stand for bullying of any sort, especially from Cheryl. Veronica displays the importance of standing up for yourself and others, especially your friends. She makes a pact with herself to change from the person she used to be back home and she starts by doing what's right instead of what's popular. Remember: always stand up for yourself and never let anyone take advantage of you.
3. Betty: "I'm asking you now, right now, if you love me, Archie, or even like me?"
Archie: "Of course I love you, Betty. But I just can't give you the answer you want.
Betty: "Why?"
Archie: "You are so perfect. I've never been good enough for you. I'll never be good enough for you."
-This conversation between Betty and Archie showcases that friends can break your heart too. Betty took a chance and Archie couldn't reciprocate her exact feelings. With time, Betty and Archie figured out their situation and realized that they couldn't not be a part of each others lives, so they both settled on being best friends once again which worked out to be better in the end for both of them. Betty put her feelings on the line, got hurt, but then learned to forgive and forget, even though she didn't get the answer she wanted. Archie stayed true to himself and made even more of an effort to keep Betty in his life, even after she expressed how she felt, because he needed his best friend and wouldn't let her just walk out of his life after so long. Always remember: everything happens for a reason and that there is a time and place for everything, no need to rush.
4. Fred: "When someone is drowning, you can try to save them, but not if they're gonna drag you down with them."
-Fred taught of the most important lessons of them all: you can only help someone so much, until they start to take advantage of you and your kindness- then it's time to walk away. Letting go of someone is never easy, especially someone who has been a part of your life for a long time, but when they start to become toxic and start to drag you under and treat you poorly, it's time to walk away. Remember: it's okay to let go of someone who doesn't treat you the way you deserve to be treated, toxic people only drown you.
5. Jughead: "You're so much strong than all of the white noise."
- Jughead Jones has gone through the most suffering, pain, and hardships throughout the series, yet he always found a way to stay positive. Life threw so much at him, but he remained strong and helped others be strong too. The advice he gave reminds us all that we are stronger than the white noise, more the less we are stronger than our pain, we are stronger than our struggles, and we are most definitely stronger than the stuff going on around us. People are people and they will always try to tear you apart, but you have the option to sink to their level or overcome it. Always remember: you are stronger than the white noise and no matter what life throws at you, you can overcome it.
The Riverdale series is based around secrets in a small town and yet the creator somehow snuck in many learning lessons you may not have realized the first time around. These 5 things stuck out to me and made me think deeper. So go throughout the rest of your days with the courage of Betty, the wisdom of Fred, the drive of Archie, the passion of Veronica, and the strength of Jughead.
