"I'll cut your heart out with a spoon!"
"Why a spoon?"
"'Cause it'll hurt more!"
This is an exchange from the 1991 movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves directed by Kevin Reynolds. It's also shouted quite frequently among my immediate family members. I wish I could say it's for a specific reason; however, it's usually just when the word "spoon" is mentioned.
Every family has its own idiosyncrasies. Mine collects random, obscure movie quotes and spout them off at relatively appropriate times. Whether it's a zippy one-liner or a section of dialogue meant for two, like the one above, the six of us are expertly trained to pipe up immediately when the situation demands. To miss an opportunity or, even worse, to misquote is an offense punishable by the highest ridicule.
If your family is anything like mine, you'll understand how serious this all is; however, if you're anything like me, you have a terrible memory and sometimes can't recall that one line. Never fear, oh like-minded individual, for I have compiled some of my family's treasures for your perusal. *May contain spoilers, so tread carefully*
1) "As you wish." Wesley from The Princess Bride
Wesley says this to Buttercup really meaning, "I love you." In my family, we usually say it to be ironic when asked to do something we don't really want to do. My parents also say it to each other to be mushy.
2) "You're an ox and a moron!" "Snaps" Provolone from Oscar
A misunderstanding of the word "oxymoron," this is used exactly how it sounds: as an insult.
3) "WHERE. IS. MY. SUPER. SUIT!?" Exchange between Frozone and his wife in The Incredibles
If you've never seen this dialogue, please YouTube it now, as it's quite hilarious. My siblings and I have the entire conversation memorized and can recite it on command. I also like to say just the first line when I can't find something.
3) "Put yourself to some useful employment." Mrs. Bennet from Pride and Prejudice
In a hilarious mad scramble before two gentleman callers enter the room, Mrs. Bennet yells at one of her daughters to stop reading or drawing and take up "useful employment" meaning sewing. Similarly, my mom likes to throw this at us whenever we're being particularly lazy.
4) "Pull yourself together!" Edna Mode from The Incredibles
Again, this is a beautiful pep talk that you need to look up if you haven't seen it. I've had this beginning line said to me many a time by my sister when I'm breaking down about a class assignment.
5) "There is too much, I must sum up." Inigo from The Princess Bride
My mom is a math teacher and likes to tell long stories somehow relating to the lesson. However, there are only 50 minutes to teach something as complicated as geometric proofs, so she must "sum up."
6) "What's happening, hot stuff?" Long Duck Dong from Sixteen Candles
My sister says this quite often as a creepy greeting; although, she isn't normally hanging upside-down on a bunk bed.
7) "Chicken...good..." Leeloo from The Fifth Element
This is said at family dinners when something tastes exceptionally good, especially when that food is chicken.
8) "Memo to me, memo to me, 'Maim you after my meeting.'" Hades from Disney's Hercules
This is a wonderful insult brought to you by the wonderful people at Disney. Said with irritation by usually my middle siblings, it could either highlight the receiver's supposed stupidity or be a bitter reply to an epic burn.
9) "I'm surrounded by idiots." Scar from Disney's The Lion King
See above
10) "An den..." Chinese Fast Food Worker from Dude, Where's My Car?
My sister and I have just recently started saying this. Instead of talking about a takeout order, however, we usually just say it when the words "and then" are said.
11) "You should roofie her and shave her head." Jen from Blended
As awful as it sounds, I think this quote is hilarious, and I use it as much as possible. It's really useful if someone is asking for advice about a particularly difficult situation and you want to either stall until you come up with actual advice or change the subject.
12) "Commercial! Commercial!" Ruby Rhod from The Fifth Element
This is used by my relations when talking about needing a break or simply a particular commercial they saw on TV. It's only effective if said with the character's unique inflection, which you will need to here to understand.
13) "Inconceivable!" "You keep using that word. I don't think you know what it means." Vizzini and Inigo from The Princess Bride
This exchange can be either used together (as it is in the movie) or separately, depending on the situation. The first line means "impossible" or "incomprehensible," so you can use it in that context to seem smarter. The second is said after someone says a weird, long-winded word like "inconceivable." My family often says this when my mom pulls out words like "lackadaisical," as we're convinced she makes them up.
14) "Two utes." Vinny from My Cousin Vinny
The real meaning is "two youths," but Vinny, with his strong New York accent, pronounces it like above. We use it when talking about two young individuals; however, you must say "ute," or the quote is ineffective.
15) "Look, I have one job on this lousy ship! It's stupid, but I'm gunna do it!" Gwen from Galaxy Quest
Simply put, Gwen's job on the ship is to repeat the what the computer says. That's it. I say this quite often, as I seem to do pointless tasks thinking they're needed, like saying food is done heating up after the microwave has just beeped.
16) "Super green." Ruby Rhod from The Fifth Element
While it may seem like a weird expression, it actually means "Sounds great" or "Good job" in context. Use sparingly, because it can quickly become a catchphrase you say all the time (not that I have experience).
17) "Zzzzzz!" Ruby Rhod from The Fifth Element
Another sentiment that can only be said with the actor's vocal flair. For a definition, it's a noise that means "go away, you're highly irritating me and no longer deserve to be in my presence."
18) "He has his own theme music?" Emperor Kuzco from The Emperor's New Groove
This is usually said with disdainful confusion when one of us is singing to ourselves and walking around the house or when one of us provides our own sound effects.
19) "It's so fluffy!" Agnes from Despicable Me
I fell in love with this movie when it first came out, so I said quotes from it with every other breath. This one stuck with my family. My dad says it in reference to my mom and me's hair and it's tendency to poof.
20) "Liar! Liar!" Valerie from The Princess Bride
Even though my family rarely talks about something as serious as the possible loss of true love, we use this quote all this time, calling each other out on obvious fibs.
These are just some of the countless quotes that my family throws around on a day-to-day basis. As you may have noticed, there are some favorite movies or characters, but we're always collecting new ones to spout off. Hopefully, this will both broaden your movie knowledge and provide you with witty quips to wow the special people in your life. Happy watching!
