When it comes to Disney, it does not matter how old you are. Disney makes movies for everyone. I am a lover of all things Disney: movies, the old storybooks, Disneyland and Disney World, short films, and more. I have been watching Disney since I was a little girl, so I have compiled a list of my top 15 Disney movies.
1. Beauty and the Beast (1991 & 2017)
Beauty and the Beast is my absolute favorite Disney Princess movie. The story that I get from it is so amazing in that Belle, this beautiful girl that can have any handsome guy she wants, fell in love with a "guy" not based off of looks but based off of his personality, which I think is great. To me, this story portrays a genuine love story (if you get past the fact that the guy is a beast throughout the entire movie).
2. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Guess how many times I watched this movie during the month of October? Probably about a hundred. Guess how many times I am going to watch this movie during the month of December? Probably a hundred more times. I absolutely love Tim Burton! So, this movie is an absolute must for me no matter what holiday season it is.
3. The Lion King (1994)
This movie was my childhood! Ask my parents, they will tell you that I loved the Lion King and guess what? I still do. I guess, deep down, I will always be the kid that loves Disney. I also love the sequel movies, but not enough to put on this list. The story of Simba trying to make it in the world after his father dies and being led astray by Scar hits me every time.
4. Moana (2016)
Ever since this movie came out, I have been absolutely, positively OBSESSED. I can sing every single song and I can say almost all the words. Every time I watch this movie, I get so happy that I feel like I am 5 years old. Also, I'm pretty sure HeiHei is the best part. I love the message of "taking away from nature only destroys it" because it is so realistic. Nature is beautiful and we shouldn't take anything from it.
5. Mulan (1998)
If this isn't a story about women overcoming their hardships in a male-dominated society, then I don't know what is. Mulan is an inspiration in many ways because she basically stood up for what she felt was right during a time when males were known to be superior.
6. Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
Let's just say that when I was younger, this movie was my jam. I absolutely loved Kida and I loved the idea that there was an entire civilization that was submerged under water and all energy was coming from the "Kings of the past" through a crystal. If you have not seen this movie, I HIGHLY recommend that you watch it.
7. Alice in Wonderland (1951, 2010, & 2016)
I put all three dates for the Alice in Wonderland movies because all of them are just so amazing. Sometimes fantasy is better than reality but who is to say which one is real? I loved how "peculiar" Wonderland was when I first saw the animated movie when I was younger. The randomness of everything that happened while Alice was in Wonderland really sparked a curiosity in my young kid brain. However, I still can't figure out one thing: Why is a raven like a writing desk?
8. Lady and the Tramp (1955)
I love Lady and the Tramp because it proves that it doesn't matter what "social status" you are. Lady is a high maintenance Cocker Spaniel that lives that "rich" life with a family but she still fell in love with a street dog (similar to how Jasmine fell in love with Aladdin).
9. Lilo and Stitch (2002)
Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind . . . or forgotten. This quote is one of the many reasons why I love this movie. Stitch didn't choose the family, the family chose him (or rather, Lilo chose him, but still). It didn't matter that Stitch was troubled and always ruined everything, Lilo still loved him with every bone in her body, and that is what family is.
10. Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Sleeping Beauty portrayed something that other Disney Princess movies had not. Prince Phillip actually took Aurora on a date before they were married. However, that is not why this movie made the list. The soundtrack for this movie was AMAZING. Along with that, the three good witches always fighting about the colors of everything added a slight twist of humor that I enjoyed.
11. Fantasia (2000)
Mickey Mouse. End of story.
12. The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
The Emperor's New Groove told the moral of "you should never be selfish" or at least, that is what I got out of it. Kuzco did not care about anybody but himself and that indirectly got him turned into a llama. Plus, this movie is just really funny!
13. The Little Mermaid (1989)
Maybe it was just the fact that when I was like 8, I wanted to be a mermaid, but I love the Little Mermaid. This might be weird, but I actually like The Little Mermaid II a little bit better. Both tell an amazing story about the challenges of love.
14. Toy Story (1995)
Instead of showing romance, Toy Story shows the evolution of friendship. This goes on with Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 but those did not make it on this list. It just goes to show that you should never judge someone by their appearance because you could become their best friend one day.
15. Inside Out (2015)
This movie hits me in the feels every time. I watch this movie and I feel every emotion portrayed on screen. Of course, Joy is my favorite character. Anger is my second, Sadness is my third, Disgust is my fourth, and Fear is my least favorite (sorry Fear). Also, the fact that this story goes through the emotions of a teenage girl is very relatable.
Ugh, there are so many more movies that I wanted to add to this list. Walt Disney made so many amazing movies including The Aristocats, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Star Wars, The Fox and the Hound, Hercules, and so many others! Even though making this list was hard, these 15 movies are the absolute best, if I see them on Netflix or TV, I will watch them right then and there without hesitation.
