If you listen to the radio, chances are you know at least a few lines to a song on Taylor Swift's platinum album, 1989. This is Taylor's fifth studio album, and by July of 2015 she had sold over five million copies nationwide.
With all the buzz around Taylor's newest album, it can be easy to forget her past albums. So whether you are a new fan of Taylor Swift's most recent pop album, or you have been a fan since her famous single "Teardrops on My Guitar" these are the top 12 Taylor Swift songs that you never knew, or forgot about:
12. Innocent
"Innocent" is from Taylor’s Speak Now album, which was released in 2010. This song is about a very well-known incident that occurred at the 2009 VMA’s between Taylor and Kanye West. Taylor was on stage making her acceptance speech for winning best female video when Kanye rudely interrupted her. This song fits into the Speak Now album perfectly, because the theme of this album is standing and speaking up for yourself for what you want and deserve. Listen to "Innocent" here!
11. Untouchable
10. Stay beautiful
“Stay Beautiful” is on Taylor’s first studio album, Taylor Swift. This song is really unique because it is about a boy, but not about a boyfriend of Taylor’s. The song mentions a boy named Cory, and in 2011 (years after the album was released) Taylor admitted: “So I suppose it all started with my first crush in 4th grade, Cory Robertson”. The story of a childhood crush is touching and heartfelt, which makes this song that much more lovable. Listen to "Stay Beautiful" here!
9. The Last Time (Feat. Gary Lightbody)
“The Last Time” is on Taylor’s album Red, which debuted in 2012. Taylor wanted to use this song to recreate sounds of other artists/bands that had inspired her, among those groups on the list was Snow Patrol. So naturally Taylor invited Snow Patrol’s lead singer to help her with this song. This song is really whimsical and they hit this song about love and longing right on the head. “Should’ve Said No” is also on the Taylor Swift album. It is about Someone who cheated when they shouldn’t have, hence the title “Should’ve Said No”. When questioned about this song, Taylor stated that it took her only 20 minutes to write this song before recording it, because she was feeling and living every line of this song at the time. But don’t be fooled: this isn’t the typical “tough” song about a cheater. This song is more written about a moral lesson. The couple could still be together, but someone cheated so they can’t. It’s a slower song, but it still has a great guitar presence, and again this sounds like the older, more “country” Taylor Swift sound we fell in love with in the beginning. “Both of Us” is the only song on the countdown where Taylor Swift is not the central writer and performer, but it is worthy of being included in the countdown. Taylor collaborated with B.o.B on this song for his album Strange Clouds. The album came out in 2012, but the song was first leaked in 2011. These two artists complement each other extremely well, especially when they are singing about pains, hardships and what it is like to frequently be the underdog. 6. Crazier
Taylor Swift wrote and recorded “Crazier” for “Hannah Montana: The Movie”. If you watch the movie, Taylor makes an appearance singing “Crazier” as just a random girl in the bar. “Crazier” isn’t on any of Taylor’s albums, so many people don’t know about it, but it is definitely worth the listen. It is a lighthearted song that fits along with the love story/plot of the movie. Watch Taylor perform "Crazier" in The Hannah Montana:The Movie here!
5. Ours
“Ours” was sold as a single, and a bonus track on the Fearless deluxe edition album. It is about being in love and/or a relationship with someone that many people in your life will not approve of. It is upbeat and fun, and it is also really tremendous because it conveys the message that we shouldn’t care about what other people think of the people we love/are in a relationship with. We love who we love, and that’s that. Watch the "Ours" official music video here!4. Better Than Revenge
“Better Than Revenge” is one of my favorite songs on the Speak Now album. There’s no way that you won’t feel like a bad-ass while listening to this song. This is one of those songs that will help pick you up when you’re down. It’s about cheating and cheaters obviously, but with a fun twist. "Better Than Revenge" is what we have always wanted to say to the person who has “stolen” our significant other, or hurt us over a relationship. “Better Than Revenge” is the anthem of our anger over being cheated on. 3. Forever & Always
"Forever & Always" is from the Fearless album, and it refers to her break-up with Joe Jonas way back in 2008. "It's about watching somebody fade away in a relationship. They said they were going to be with you forever, that they loved you, and then something changed in the relationship and you don't know what it is, but you're watching them slowly drift. That emotion of rejection, for me, usually starts out sad and then gets mad. This song starts with this pretty melody that's easy to sing along with, then at the end, I'm basically screaming it because I'm so mad. I'm really proud of that." was how Taylor described the song and her relationship with Joe to the LA Times back in 2008. This song is everything we ever felt when someone we like didn't call or text us back, or they didn't like us back. Watch the live performance of "Forever & Always" on the Fearless Tour!
2. Picture to Burn
“Picture to Burn” is also on the Taylor Swift album, and it is another song of vengeance. Taylor has said that this song is also written about a guy that she almost dated in high school, but never got around to it. She came about writing this song by just writing how she felt about this guy down in her journal and forging it into a song later. She says she never meant to make offense to anyone, but if you’re mean to her or break her heart, she’s gonna write a song about you, and this is the perfect example! It’s another song that will help lift you up when you listen to it. Who cares about that stupid guy or girl? Let that stuff burn and move on!
