I mean, as much as I'm going to miss orchestra while in college, there are just something thing I won't miss that all orchestra kids can relate to.
1. Left hand is bigger than the right.
I mean I don't know if it's just me, but it's real. If you're a string instrumentalist and don't believe me, I recommend you check.
2. Getting jabbed by your stand partner's bow
Let me tell you — my life has flashed before my eyes one too many times. It literally happens in slow motion when your stand partner's bow comes straight for your eye.
3. Rosin ends up everywhere.
"You have something on your pants."4. When someone uses your rosin without asking
5. When your conductor changes your fingerings
Would you like to just play instead? Let. Me. Do. Me6. Watching an actor/actress pretend to play
No. It's more excruciating than you think to watch that happen.
7. Being in the middle of practice and literally having no idea what the hell is going on, but your conductor keeps going
The best part when this happens, though, is when your stand partner is lost and you just keep giving each other faces.
8. Excessive ledger lines
Yea. Excuse me while I sit there whispering, "E, F, G, A, B, C, D..." to myself trying to figure out what note I'm supposed to be playing.
9. Short. Nails.
The hardest thing to do was getting your nails done for a school dance and then going into orchestra with long nails. It just doesn't work. Was it just me, or did everyone else's orchestra rooms have nail clippers hung on the wall as well?
10. Getting yelled at for trying to play someone else's instrument
I think this was more toward fifth grade to middle school, but my teachers did not like when I tried playing an instrument other than the violin. My friends and I still traded instruments though. What I learned from it, though, was that I should stick to the violin, and my teachers get very angry.
11. (Bonus) Violin hickeys
No. I did not manage to go and make out with someone during the five-minute passing period I have to get to my next class! Violin hickeys outside of the orchestra room are the bane of my existence. But in the orchestra world, it means you practice a lot and are probably dedicated with good posture.
