The Top 10 Resolutions College Students Made And Broke Fall Semester

New year, new me.

We heard it on January 1, 2015 and saw far too many Facebook posts and tweets about how 2015 was the year for change. As much as we tried, we just couldn't get ourselves together during Spring Semester, but we promised that fall would be different. Now here we are, and well, at least, we tried. Here are the top 10 resolutions college students made and broke this semester.

1. I will get 7 hours of sleep every night.

I think this maybe lasted all of syllabus week before the sleep deprivation began. Whether it was because of excessive readings and homework or letting off steam when we reunited with friends, many naps were taken this semester to recover from nights with 3 hours of sleep.

2. I will go to the gym four times a week.

This is always something we tell ourselves we will do if we just make it a habit. But somewhere along the way, typically in the third week of the semester, binge eating chips and watching Narcos became far more important than the daily sweat sesh.

3. I won't procrastinate on my homework.

This resolution is almost laughable. As much as we tell ourselves that the second we get home from class, we will work on our homework and readings, it's inevitable that something else will seem more important (or more fun) and the work will be left for later. At this point, if I'm not doing something the day before it's due it is not procrastination because there is a whole twenty-four hour period between the work and the deadline.

4. I will only watch Netflix when I'm done with to-do list.

Didn't happen and probably won't happen in the future. Responding to one email per episode of Friends counts as productivity, right?

5. I will only go out two nights a week.

I think we all gave into temptation more times than we'd like to admit. Weekday specials called our names and we answered far too quickly and too often.

6. I won't skip class.

Sorry, Mom. Sometimes I just couldn't. That paper wasn't going to write itself (sadly). Those naps weren't going to take themselves. That Netflix season wasn't going to watch itself.

7. I won't overspend on food this semester.

If there's one thing I really hope I adjust Spring 2016, it's my spending on food. Despite the E. Coli scares I spent more than ever on Chipotle. There was no stopping me from getting my steak burrito once, okay usually twice but no more than three times, a week.

8. I will dress up for class everyday.

It's always good to strive for this. Admittedly, it shouldn't really be that hard to look nice for class everyday. But after an all nighter at Jerome or karaoke night at Uptown, joggers and a crewneck seem like a much more reasonable outfit choice than jeans and a nice top.

9. I will do all of the offered extra credit during the semester.

We all know that we should do this, it makes finals week proportionally less stressful and usually boosts your reputation with the professor. However, when you're already struggling under the weight of three midterms and four papers, it just doesn't happen.

10. I will earn a 4.0 GPA.

Haha, nope. Maybe Spring Semester!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
