Top 10 Reasons Why I Love Michael Jackson
Liz Hernandez

When I was 11 years old I fell in love with a man. An older man, he was 50 years old. This man was what some people may call odd, eccentric, or downright weird. However, from the moment my aunt played Michael Jackson "Number Ones" in our living room, I was hooked. I was hooked on his music, I was hooked on how he visually seemed to change as the videos progressed, and I was hooked on his message of love and acceptance. Because, make no mistake, no matter what Michael was going through he had one message: "It's all for love."

Here are my top 10 reasons for my love and dedication to the the man, the myth, the legend; Michael Jackson. (Gasp! Only 10? Of course not! However, time is of the essence!)

1. He's a total goofball.

If one was to spend as much time on the internet watching Michael Jackson videos like I have, you will come across bloopers that are downright hilarious. They show a side of the king that isn't polished and ready for the camera. Recommendation: Michael Jackson Home Videos

2. His desire to be a celebrity.

A lot of celebrities "claim" they never wanted to be a celebrity but wanted to work in Hollywood and be left alone. Michael recognized that he caused the world to have multiple meltdowns and he worked it. Ever see a video of Michael Jackson casually walking down the street? No, because he couldn't. Although he did enjoy this to some extent, he also wanted to be normal every now and then. Which brings me to my next point.

3. His loneliness.

Michael is a great example of an outsider. Going through life with great success, but never finding your niche. It's weird to say that I love him for this, but it is a reason why I always felt so close to him. If souls could touch, I believed ours did and we both weren't so lonely anymore. (Don't worry, I know I'm a tad obsessive.)

4. His secrecy.

There’s so much about Michael’s life that no one is quite certain about. Michael was the master of mystery. Always leaving the world to wonder what was true or false about his life. This has to do with the fact that Michael didn’t think too much exposure was good exposure. So, because of that, he did very few interviews. He built his own place of wonder called Neverland and came out only when he wanted to.

5. His style.

A true artist has his or her own signature style. Michael had his own style. When people think of Michael Jackson a few things automatically come to mind; the highwater pants, the hat, the glove, those socks, and those shoes. Those are only a few iconic pieces that Michael is known for. All of this he created to stand out and it worked.

6. His music.

I LOVE Michael’s music. In all honestly, I truly believe that his music will survive forever. It will be never forgotten. I mean, c’mon, his fans wouldn’t let that happen. Anyways, I love everything about his music. The production, the beats, and the groove has always been so smooth. (This makes a lot of sense considering he went four to five years working on an album). He had a special way of bringing a smile to your lips when you listened to his music. It’s almost as if he’s singing right next to you. A very personal feel to all of his music. I’m sad that my generation and I didn’t have the privilege of being around when he was actually releasing music. That would’ve been a time to remember.

7. His videos.

Michael didn’t make music videos. He made short films. I dare you to refer to any of Michael’s short films as “music videos” and you’ll be in for a rude awakening. We don’t play that. Anyways, what I love about Michael’s music videos is the amount of work that’s obvious in each short video. In almost all of Michael’s music videos, he has a unique concept that relates to his music perfectly. Let’s not even bring up the dance sequences in these videos! My God! That man can dance! My favorite music videos are Thriller, Bad, Remember the Time, Ghost, and You Rock My World.

8. His dancing.

I mentioned this already, but Michael’s dancing deserves a point all on its own. If one looks at Michael’s career from when he was a child up to when he reached his adult years, there is definitely a progression with his dancing. He goes from cutely bopping around to making the world gasp in shock as he glides across the floor. Michael was able to do choreography with his dancers, breakout with his signature moves, and then blend right back in with his dancers. That’s a genius.

9. His love for his fans.

Michael loved me. He truly did. He didn’t know me, but he adored me all the same. There are very few celebrities who genuinely love their fans. Michael’s security always spoke about how he was hard to manage because he wanted to be close to his fans. And, I have to admit, we were a tad bit too excited sometimes. Either way, Michael recognized our excitement as love and adoration. He appreciated it and craved it all throughout his life. He knew we were always there for him. He always said he loves us more, but I have to say, we love you most, Michael.

10. His need to give.

Michael was named the most charitable celebrity by Guinness Book Of Records. This would be one of his greatest achievements. No matter how big he got, he always remembered to give to other people. Spread love. Spread healing. Help those in need. Never forget that someone has it worst than you at the moment, and never wish that someone would die to be where you’re at. So, stay humble and always help people, with a smile on your face. If everyone did this, the world would be in a much better position. This is something that all of MJ’s fans try to spread; if anything this will be his legacy.

Well, there you have it! So many people are curious about my dedication to the King of Pop and now you all know. Long live the king!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
