Most college campuses have one, if not multiple a cappella groups on campus. For those who are unaware of the a cappella phenomena, it's basically a group of singers who get together and cover popular songs using their voice alone to mimic instruments. It can be truly captivating. But there's always those songs; the ones everyone knows, everyone loves, and that every group covers.
10. "Brown Eyed Girl," by Van Morrison
Very fun. Less fun when two groups cover it in the same concert.
9. "Come Fly With Me," by Frank Sinatra
Sinatra sang so effortlessly and smoothly, it's a huge reason why people adored him and his music. Seeing a 20-something straining to sing a version of this, two half steps up, for some reason, ruins the Sinatra vibe.
8. "Lollipop," by The Chordettes
You better pray to God that whatever section starts the song starts on the right note.
7. "Somebody I Used to Know," by Gotye
Very catchy, and super translatable to a cappella. But of course, it became less fresh with each voice crack at the chorus.
6. Any and All Video Game Themes
I'm sorry, but your cover of the "Legend of Zelda," "Halo," or "Pokemon" theme isn't original. A lot of the audience might have zero clue what it is, and it'll only be funny to the group itself, and those who are in the loop. This one may or may not hit close to home for me.
5. "ABC Café"/"Red and Black," from "Les Misérables"
You are not Ramin Karimloo, Michael Ball, or Alfie Boe; while I'm sure you are a group of great singers, please don't go there.
4. "I'm Yours," by Jason Mraz
This one really should go without saying. Even if you know nothing of a cappella, you've seen someone, drunk or not, covering this on their acoustic, and then putting said acoustic away when asked to play another song.
3. "Feeling Good," by Nina Simone
This song was actually written for the musical "The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd," and later covered by Nina Simone, and subsequently became a standard. So your cover is actually a cover of a cover, sometimes of another cover. Trippy stuff.
2. "For the Longest Time," by Billy Joel
This one is actually so overdone I had to look up the original singer. It is an a cappella song, so I can understand it being in your repertoire, but it's been done too much.
1. "Titanium," by David Guetta feat. Sia
It takes some vocal chops to do Sia well, and keep that power consistent throughout, and a lot of groups don't get that. I've seen too many groups cover this song. Small concerts, big concerts, ICCAs, it doesn't matter, it's always there. I might never escape it.
